Can Ritalin increase depression ? I am trying Ritalin (5-10 mg) to 30 mg Paxil because I am very tired of Paxil. I feel some worsening of depression (sadness, motivation..) but I am not sure if its from the Ritalin or just a mood swing (i am unipolar perhaps bipolar II) of which I had severals.

Hi Ben,
I tried Ritalin for depression and fatigue, and yes, it DID make my depression much worse, right away. My psychiatrist had me stop taking it; she said stimulants can cause mood swings in some people.take care; I hope this helps,

Hi Cindylou
I am not sure if the Ritalin makes it worser. How long should I try it to judge right the pros and cons ? I feel dizzy after taking the Ritalin for a while. I tried now the slow release but I cut the tabs in half instead it shouldnt be done...faster dissolution of the tabs. I think 20 mg is too much....headache, sedation...

Hi Ben --
I can't remember how much Ritalin I took, but I'm almost positive it was only 5 mg -- 20 does sound like a lot, at least to start. Also, my pdoc believes that if Ritalin causes a bad reaction in the beginning, you shouldn't continue to take it -- I don't think you get adjusted to the side effects, like you do with other meds.
Does anyone out there know more about that?
Thanks, and take care, Ben!

Perhaps you should talk to your doc about trying a stimulant that is longer acting, like adderall or dexedrine. When I took Ritalin, even the SR version, I got "rebound" depression and moodiness when the drug wore off after about 2-3 (or 4-5 on the SR) hours. I don't have this problem with adderall.

How much Dexedrine do you take ? I am a bit scared of amphetamines because they tend more to make addictive and could activate a psychosis...tolerance... I guess I could have problems with Amphetamines because my electrocardiogramm istnt normal...had a heart operation (QT interval is streched !!!)...I had worsening of this problem with tricyclics and antipsychotics.

I guess I have mood swings since starting Ritalin (a wekk ago). I am taking 2x 5 mg to 30 mg Paxil (makes me tired) as an augmentation strategy. Is this possible ? How long should I try it ? My doc said that I have to try several days and different amounts ! What do you think about that. It seems that it is working a day or two and then making my mood bad (swings during the day). What about Provigil (Modafinil) or Dexedrine (d-amphetamin) concerning mood and energy ? I tried Reboxetine with success on drive but not at all on mood (pooped out quickly). I fear of amphetamines because of dependence, promoting psychosis and depression as well...

Ben,
Been on Adderall before, but not Ritalin. From what I understand the blood levels with Ritalin are so short-lived you need very frequent doses. Even the Concerta (extended release) can be troublesome from what I read here. Adderall flattened out my mood swings and I think you ought to try it instead of Ritalin. Or you can try just plain dexedrine Spansules (which are time-release).

Ben,
I found Ritalin and even Ritalin SR to be short acting, leaving me with rebound depression when it wore off. I feel better on Adderall.
Mitch,
Just to clarify--if your impression about Concerta is based on something I wrote, let me clarifiy that when I referred to the Sustained release version of Ritalin, I was referring to Ritalin SR, NOT Concerta. I have never tried Concerta. I have heard from a few people that they like it, that it does last much longer. It has a completely different process of releasing the med slowly. Perhaps your impression of Concerta is from another source, but I just thought I'd clarify in case it was from my posts.
