guilt over xanax use

Posted by gilbert on May 13, 2001, at 20:28:34

I am a recovering alcoholic, sober 15 years . I suffer from panic for years and some depression. I have tried celexa, prozac, effexor and serzone all with bad side effects. I have tried desyrel, pamelor, and remeron and wellbutrinsr all with some cardiac side effects ...racing heart etc. I have tried klonopin at 5mg 3 times per day.....made me inpotent what a surprise. The only effective medicine for me has been xanax at 1 mg to 1.5 mg per day. I have never had to increase this dose and have tried all these other drugs over a 2 year period in order to get off the xanax which seems to help. Am I just a benzo phobe. I also have no problems coming on or off the xanax seems like I have zero withdraw. Is their any other drugs out there I should try that would be without side effects or with less social stigma than the xanax. P.S. I never feel high from the xanax, never abuse the script, always have left over pills and would probably have gotten drunk if I had not had this med the past 2 years

You asked a difficult question. The only alternatives I can think of for you are Paxil and Tofranil... What kinds of side-effects did you get from SSRI's?

I take one 1 mg Xanax tablet nightly. I have no guilt at all and neither should you. It works, it's simple, you're obviously not obsessed with the drug. Just keep taking it as it works well for you. There should be no shame. You should be happy you found the right med for you. Stay well.

Honestly I have felt more out of it and stoned on the ssri's than other drugs. I have had anorgasmia with all of them and they put me on the ceiling. I have to take the xanax with them or I feel like I am on speed. I have had some temper outbursts that were quite unusual for me. Not typical temper outbursts but actually threw things at a wall.....really frightening.....Gil

Gil,

I have 13 years sober and I take Xanax almost daily (.5mgs). I too went thru the guilt of mood altering chemicals, it's tough. But I finally realized that I have a right to live as normal an existence as possible, and if that means that meds are part of my life, then so be it.

We alcoholics beat ourselves up over so many things, don't we? It doesn't sound like to me that you are taking the Xanax for the high. Don't feel guilt over taking of yourself. Be satisfied that you are doing what is necessary to give yourself the best shot at a happy life.

Peace,
Greg

> Hi Gil,
I took Xanax for many years and it was very difficult to stop taking.
I would suggest Buspar. This is non-addictive and will not make you
feel tierd like the Xanax.
