Klonopin vs. Xanax

Posted by Nic on April 30, 2001, at 10:16:01

I have been on Celexa 40mg. and Klonopin 3mg for about 5 months now, before that I was on Serzone and Klonopin, but the Serzone made me to tired.
As far as the Klonopin goes, I wonder if it can make the depression worst at times. That's why I thought that maybe Xanax would work better. I suffer from Depression and both Panic and Anxiety Attacks and have been diagnosed as being Bipolar also.
Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Kindest Regards,

Nic

Hi Nic. I have been on Klonopin prn for about 18mos. When I take over about 2mg/day, I do notice my depression more. Xanax didn't work as well for me. I had to take it more often to get a decent result & was sleeping all the time. Re: Bipolar dx-have you discussed a mood stabilizer with your doc? I am also bipolar & didn't start feeling better till I was put on Neurontin 800mgx2 & Topomax 50mgx2. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Xanax is shorter acting whereas Klonopin stays in your system longer. I have taken both and prefer the Klonopin. But I have only taken .50mg/day. I would sleep all day if I took more. I also take Celexa and it makes me very tired. If you have been diagnosed as Bipolar does your pdoc think you need a mood stabilizer or is the Klonopin supposed to take care of that? Whenever my depression breaks through I tend to want to blame one of my meds. I wish I knew the answer as to whether Klonopin worsens depression also. Lots of people here may know.
Blessings,
JaneB

By adding gabapentin, you can get rid of the anxiety and possibly the bipolar symptoms ("kill two birds with one stone").

Does the neurontin or klonopin decrease sex drive?

Klonopin on it's own just makes me sleepy; I take it for insomnia. I'm pretty sure it has a fairly benign effect on my mood. Added to Lamictal it may even improve my mood slightly (possibly some mood stabilizing synergy going on?).

Because of it's short half-life Xanax can cause rebound depression if you miss a dose. I found higher & higher doses were needed.

It's worth noting that ADs (ie Celexa) can, & often do, *worsen* the moods of Bipolar people. I'm curious as to why you haven't been prescribed a mood stabilizer with a BP dx. I would've thought that a MS wld be central to yr meds regimen...

As Jah noted, the ad's do worsen bipolar symptoms. Without a mood stabilizer (and klonopin isn't really effective by itself) you're playing with fire. Xanax has been noted to cause hypo/manic episodes in some people. All benzos have a depressant effect. hope this helps- judy

I haven't heard reports of decreased libido with Neurontin or Klonopin, and its not listed as a significant side-effect on either drug's monograph.

When I tried Neurontin 3200 mg. for Social Anxiety, I was suprised to experience the same kind of anorgasmia I had dealt with when taking Nardil, and later Celexa.

Klonopin actually increases my libido and sexual function (sensations, not "stamina"). With the optimal doses I feel no sedation or "dopiness" as I did with Xanax. Also, the Klonopin lasts longer and most importantly helps so much more with the Social Phobia.

Flip side of the coin: While any benzo can cause some memory lapse, Klonopin seems more likely than the others to cause this, especially at higher doses. And it is reputed to cause depression to occur/return in some individuals. Xanax, on the other hand, has antidepressant qualities of its own if taken regularly (another poster already pointed out possible consequences of missed doses). Interestingly, not long ago I ran across a Medline study abstract showing Klonopin to be an effective antidepressant by itself. Fyi, Roche's official monograph points out that a link between Klonopin and depression hasn't been established. But I find it hard to believe that all of the people who have reported a depressive effect on boards like this have been mistaken. On the other hand, one of the less-common, but not rare, adverse effects listed for most *antidepressants* is...depression!

Regardless, Klonopin has been a godsend for my non-depressive severe Social Anxiety, and has been the linchpin of my successful treatment since I first tried it.

In the PDR "sexual problems" is listed as one of Neurontin's "less common" side effects

Thanks for all your responses, I appreciated.
Tolerence is my biggest concern with going to Xanax, and like I said, I think that klonopin is great for anxiety, it just seems to worsen my depression.

Klonopin flattens my mood and reduces my cognition somewhat. I have just continued to reduce the dosage until it was tolerable.

Klonopin caused me to be extremely depressed and really hateful. It got to the point where i tried to commit suicide on sunday. It was very crazy in my neck of the woods that day. Im doin alright now if anyone cares. they have me on depakote. Im not sleeping very well at all. mayeve an hour or two. i feel like i have to keep busy or i will start to think and be sad ( my boyfriend and i broke up). But, atleast I don't feel suicidal right now. Klonopin was definately not for me. I would stick with the xanax. i was fine on that.
