Any new meds in the pipeline?

Posted by buffalo1 on January 17, 2001, at 16:20:47

Does anyone know if there are any new meds due out soon, specificlly, AD. I know that Phifzer has Zoldox coming out, but that's a neuroleptic.

I'm not familiar with what's in the pipeline. I know a company called Sepracor is constantly working on creating new versions of existing drugs, except without the side effects.

Of course, it depends on what country you're talking about. New drugs for the USA? I can tell you for sure there are wonderful meds throughout the world that will never be subjected to the 15 years and 15 million dollars it takes to get through the overstuffed suits of the FDA. The cool part though is that we don't need to wait for the FDA's approval. Millions of people over decades have already proven the medicines' worth and safety. It's simply a matter of getting them from there to here, which is easy with a computer, a credit card, and a mailbox. :-)

^^^^^^^^^^
Fifteen million clams? A mere bag of shells, Sir! The fact is that it takes approximately $250 million bucks to get a new drug to market. Check out the fiasco Knoll Pharmaceuticals went through with MERIDIA, developed first as an SSRI, but later changed to an anorectic agent (diet pill) when it failed all sorts of studies and tests. A double whammy, and waste, in this case

You're probably thinking of the usual 15 million dollar yearly bonuses these drug CEOs so casually pocket, without remorse or compunction. Oink! Oink!

Greetz to John: your message was excellent.

There was an article this week in the Boston Globe about Pfizer and drugs in the pipeline. They said two were going to Phase III trials later this year and no sexual dysfunction was one quality remarked upon in the chart.

From a press release on their web site about drugs in the pipeline:
http://www.pfizer.com/pfizerinc/investing/analystrelease1211.html

...and Pagoclone, a novel Gaba A receptor modulator for the treatment of panic disorders.

He also reported that Pfizer is investigating four mechanistically distinct antidepressants in early stages of development, and is beginning Phase III trials in 2001 for CP-122,721, an NK-1 antagonist. This compound demonstrated robust antidepressive effects in a Phase II trial in depressed patients.

Phase II trials are ongoing for CP-526,555, an oral treatment for smoking cessation. Smoking causes 400,000 deaths a year and generates annual healthcare system costs of $50 billion each year. As a partial agonist, CP-526,555 partially stimulates the nicotine receptor in the brain to satisfy a smoker's nicotine craving while, at the same time, blocking the nicotine receptor from the reinforcing value of nicotine in smoke.

Hey JohnL

Is it really that easy ordering drugs from
overseas? Don't you have to have a prescription?
Do you have to pay full price or does health insurance
work?

From another BBS is a link:

http://www.phrma.org/searchcures/newmeds/mentalillsurv2000/mental00.pdf

Lots of information but most of the "new" drugs are either "me too" types or getting off label usage approved.
