A professor friend of mine photocopied an article and passed it along to me, because he knew I'm into the Internet and support groups.. imagine my surprise when I saw our own Dr. Bob had written an article for some professional journal about us!!!!! he totally quoted people at length in the article, even someone's poem they had posted, in memory of somebody using the dead person's real name. the other names he used were aliases, but he would quote entire messages.I thought this board was for support, not to be written up as guinea pigs for some study!!!!!!!!! is that what we are here?? I feel so used and had to register a new name even though I've been posting here for months.. did he ask us for our permission to use our words??? i checked out his 'privacy policy' and it said nothing about using our posts for his own research. did his university's IRB approve his eavesdropping on this supposed "support" forum and use our own words in a journal publication!?!?!?
i'm so upset right now. I can't believe this is happening..

I do not get the affront....
This board is public.. it is not a private conversation.. Anyone can read it.. & post to it.
Why would anyone assume otherwise ?

In return for what the (genuinely, I believe) altruistic Dr Bob does for us; providing a much-needed forum, & maintaining a therapeutic environment within, I personally don't have a problem with providing a few personal facts for use in his (important, I'm sure) work.

> Jah.I am not against this info being used if it were our real names I would be mad but I think it is very important to reach out to as many people as possible who are just getting "the facts" about sedatives and a.ds from the drug companies and doctors and pharmacists. I tell my friends and family about info from this board to try to help them. Why should problems people are having w/ the meds be kept a secret? I have even e-mailed oprah and 60 minutes II and other news shows that they should do a story about the real truth about a.d.s. and other meds and how I also think there is a link between the big obesity problem in america maybe being tied to the fact that more americans are on a.ds more than ever. I think papers like Dr. Bob's could be helpful to people to see real people that have experienced the drugs opinion than from doctors, and pharmacists and from the drug co. people who don't have a clue just scientific mumbo jumbo.

I am of course assuming that it exists somewhere on the Internet. I know many of Bob's publications do.

Dear Anna,I can understand your feelings, and I realize how upsetting this will be for some people. Even I would like to take some time to process this realization. I hope you don't stop posting, but I would understand it if you were too. Personally, I can think of a few posts of mine that I now find embarrassing. I can also think of a few that are just plain personal. I am not sure whether I should feel like my privacy has been violated or to feel like I am an important contributor, hoping that such information will help gain insights into what it means to be human.
Perhaps your feelings will change with time. Perhaps mine will too.
Thanks for posting this.
Sincerely,
Scott

Yep, it says right there at the top of the page,
"submitting a message gives me permission to use it as I wish".

> "submitting a message gives me permission to use it as I wish".Okay, there's a LOT of text at the top of the page and I'm sure I didn't read every bit of on my first visit here, although I did on later visits.. but since when is MY writing of MY words not MINE? Apparently when it's posted here which is just unreal for me.. i take my writings very personally and thought i owned everything i wrote. I never for a moment thought someone could just use what i write without even first bothering to ask me!!!!
so I guess Dr. Bob has the right to take everything posted here and throw it into a book and make a few thousand dollars off of us. what a sad thought.
The article is in something called 'cyberpsychology and behavior,' looks like it's a professional thingy. Its the dec. 2000 issue and it starts on page 935. vesper is identified by name in the article, in addition to Tammy's full poem dedicated to Tanner Jason Tobac. Nothing about his getting permission or even bothering to ask us about how we feel about this.... and i still would like to know about whether his IRB approved this or not.

oh, I guess that makes EVERYTHING alright!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!
geez louise, get a clue. Just because he says something doesn't make it true!!! Copyright law in the United States (where I am) specifically says that unless *I*, as the AUTHOR of my material, CHOOSE to give permission for my words to be used elsewhere, they can not be.. I retain rights to my works, not some doc who thinks he can use me as his research rat.

Well, I guess the easiest answer is not to post. Do you think Dr Bob runs this site for his own fun??? No!!!! We all know that when posting in cyberspace we are putting ourselves at risk of anything we write being used by anyone without our express permission.
Dr bob has *every* right to use anything we post on here, as he has stated. I hope that he will post in this thread and point this out to you.
I'm sure that 99% of the people here realise that whatever they post may be used by Dr Bob, and only post what they're happy with people reading. I know I only post what I'm happy with *anyone* reading, as this is also a site *anyone* can read. Remember that.
Also, you're showing your email address, with what looks like your full name. Surely if you're so worried about never being identified this was a bit naive.

It *is* for support and is *not* an experiment in which I'm manipulating anyone or anything. I'm sorry if this caught you by surprise. The possibility of an article is mentioned in the FAQ:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#copyright
And I've even referred before to this specific article:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/admin/20001124/msgs/31.html
> did his university's IRB approve his eavesdropping on this supposed "support" forum and use our own words in a journal publication!?!?!?
I did contact the IRB about the research project that Bob (not the currently registered Bob, the former one) proposed, but that's all in limbo. The IRB approves research, not publication, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them about this, so I'll do that and try to get an official answer.
> i'm so upset right now. I can't believe this is happening..
Was there something specific that you said, or that I said about you, that you're upset about?
> so I guess Dr. Bob has the right to take everything posted here and throw it into a book and make a few thousand dollars off of us. what a sad thought.
FYI, as far as making money "off of you", I've also been considering for a while having a charge be part of the registration process (and therefore required to post)...
Please redirect any follow-ups to this to Psycho-Babble Administration. You can do that at the top of the confirmation page, after you first submit a post. Thanks,

Dr. Bob's Psycho Babble is a wonderful place to post a question, or reply to one. Dr. Bob is doing a wonderful service for all of us. Please, go to another Board if you're going to whine and complain about something being printed which may help others. I for one support Dr. Bob and hope Psycho Babble stays here forever. It has truly helped me so much.

Guys,
I don't feel that the angry posts attacking Anna are justified. They are also quite unseemly. All she did was to put into words her reactions, both intellectual and emotional, to what she had just discovered. She said that she was upset.
"i'm so upset right now. I can't believe this is happening."
People who are upset say some pretty intense things. Anna was not at all uncivil.
Why such a reaction?
I believe that some folks have such a love of Dr. Bob and Psycho-Babble, that their judgments have been clouded and their resultant reactions are not commensurate with Anna's words. Remember, for some people, Psycho-Babble is their savior. They will defend it vehemently because they have such a vested interest in its existence.
At some point, Anna may have felt as if she were backed into a corner. "Fight or flight". Remember? I think any of her subsequent posts should be viewed with this in mind.
My 2 cents.

I think the fact that things from this board are published for others to see is awesome. I have no problem with that at all. The more people that can read what is said here, the more people will discover answers and options.

I really don't want this board, which is for medication-related issues, to get diverted by this issue. Further discussion is welcome at Psycho-Babble Administration, but will be deleted here.
Thanks,
Bob
