Floaters Marijuana

Posted by Andy on January 5, 2001, at 11:11:17

OK, I'm 27 & a couple of weeks ago developed a 'floater'. This is a small collection of cells that form in the gel part of the eye & cast shadows on the retina. As someone in an earlier discussion put it, they look like microbes in a petri dish.

Here's my question - besides the aging process, the smoking of marijuana cause floaters? I understand the the CMV virus can also cause it, but if that was the case, wouldn't I have antibodies to fight it?

I now understand that unless I want a dangerous surgery, I have to learn to live with this floater. Any other thoughts on this?

Please help...

I left out the word 'can' - Can marijuana smoking cause floaters?

Andy - Floaters are just as natural as shedding skin. All they are (in most cases) are pieces of blood vessel that have regenerated, shedding (sloughing off) the old ones. I am not positive, but since marijuana smoking causes red eyes (dilation of the blood vessels in the eye), the turnover of said blood vessels may occur more often in imbibers. Or it could be that because you are stoned, you have a tendency to notice the floaters (ie more "in tune" with your surroundings). In any case, they are not harmful.

Hope this helps - Cam

I smoked pot regularly for several years (not anymore, though) and have always experienced floaters-even before smoking. I was at the opthalmologist for a full exam last month, and he (a renowned doctor) said floaters are perfectly normal retinal images. I have 20-15 vision and take floaters for granted-even find them entertaining = >)
