I just switched from Paxil (gained 20lbs)to Serzone, hoping to lose the extra weight. It's definitely a bummer to hear your story. I don't know what it is about these meds that plays such havoc on body composition, but I hate it. Last year, I was taking Wellbutrin. I ran 30min a day and lifted weights for 4 hours a day. I wasn't fat, but I certainly shouldn't have had the excess body fat that I did.
I've heard some positive feedback from people switching to Serzone from Paxil, but your story is unnerving. I'd be interested to hear the experiences of others who have made the SSRI to Serzone switch for the same reason.

I gained 50 lbs in three years on Paxil. I've been off it for three weeks now and and waiting rather impatiently for the weight to come off. I think I've even gained more, and I work out every day and watch what I eat. I'm still going through the withdrawal symptoms to some extent, but luckily it wasn't nearly as bad as what I read. Has anyone out there experienced the withdrawals? If so, did you have severe allergies all of a sudden. I've been having to take benedryl every day to keep from sneezing my head off, and I rarely have allergy symptoms. I'm wondering if it is related. Also, my joints ache incessantly. Someone said their doctor, who like most will INSIST there are no side effects from going off Paxil, ran tests for fybromyalgia and lupus. It's funny that about the same time my mother went off Paxil, she also was diagnosed first with lupus, then with fibromyalgia, even though the tests were inconclusive. Now, I'm having symptoms for the first time since I went off Paxil. Coincidence? Does this go away????

I forgot to mention the sleeplessness. Someone else mentioned having the problem after they went off Paxil. Part of the reason I went on it was because I couldn't sleep--you know a common symptom of depression. Well, guess what, three weeks off of Paxil and I can't sleep any more. This is a really tough situation.

I am baffled by all of the responses that I keep reading about gaining weight while taking Paxil or after quitting. One of my friends lost over 100 pounds on Paxil four years ago and never gained any of it back when she stopped taking it. Is she a freak or something? I am taking it now myself and have seen no change in my weight at all, but I become more worried everyday that it is only a matter of time before I start blimping up. Being that I have a weight problem now, God only knows what I might look like if I ever stop taking this medication. Should I stop taking it now just to be safe? (I have only been taking it for a few months)

I never had a weight problem in my life. I weighed in at 110 from the time I was 20 years old. After I had my baby I came out of the hospital weighing 115 and quickly dropped back down to 110. People at work called me Mikey cause I could eat anything and never gain weight. The doctor told me I might lose a little weight on Paxil. The first month or so, I probably did, because it really decreased my appetite. After that, though, I crept up to 116...122...128...135...142 (stayed there for a while)...148....160. I race walk 30 minutes every day. I actually started watching what I eat for the first time in my life. The weight would not come off, and in fact, it kept coming on. From what I've read out here, and from the people I know on Paxil, I think your friend's weight loss is unusual. I'm sure drugs react differently with different people. I've got a really bad attitude about Paxil right now, but I would suggest that if you just started it, you might want to try something else, like Serzone...if for no other reason than if you decide to go off Paxil, the withdrawals are hell. And I've had it easy compared to other's storied I've read.

> I gained a significant amount of weight recently too. I suffered from a 'situational' depression for lack of a better description. I had an infant and already had weight to lose. Once I finally weaned off - I got severe joint pain and mood swings and worst of all - so much more weight to lose. It seems no matter what I do, it won't come off. NO ONE ADVISED ME OF ANY OF THIS EVEN WHEN I ASKED. When I called my psych after making the connection he said to take 5 mg every 3rd day for 2 weeks. As soon as I took the first 5 mg, the joint pain disappeared. I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to take Paxil any more, expecially now. I still struggle with whether or not I needed it in the first place and was told there are no problems going off it, etc.!!!!!
NOW, I think I'm depressed!

I am 28 years old and I have been on 20mg of Paxil for almost 6 years now. I have had 2 children while taking paxil. It was just brought to my attention about 1 month ago that Paxil can cause weight gain. Well, maybe that explains why I've gained about 80lbs in the past 6 years. No matter what I do, the weight just keeps adding up. So, I took it upon myself to start weaning off. I do know from past expierences that I personally can not go cold turkey. I have cut down to 15mg for the past 2 weeks now. I still have a little fuzzy headed feeling at night, I also have had the runs, and now I am having vaginal bleeding. I was going to go to 10mg after 2 weeks, but I think I will stay on 15mg until these symtoms stop. I just hope I can get my girlish figure back. My poor husband, I gained 80lbs, plus no sex drive. wish me luck.

I have been taking paxil (20 mg) for about three years. An initial 6 months on zoloft wasn't good for me--made me too nervous. I have come to believe that I really was suffering from an anxiety problem rather than or in addition to depression. But, in any case, paxil definitely makes me feel more like the person I AM. I do worry about withdrawal, but since it works for me, I don't intend to stop taking it. As far as weight goes: I have been very overweight my whole life, since about age five. Probably because of the stigma, I was on my first diet at about seven. You got it--YO YO, MA MA big time. Probably at my highest (even counting pregnant) when I started ADs. I pretty much stayed at the same weight for two years, very unusual. This last year I have been doing a VERY mini, VERY modified version of High Protein/High Fat, Low Carbs and lost 15 pounds without really trying. And this from a 57-year-old who's never had it easy losing except for one fluke while nursing. Now I'm encouraged to keep going. Who knows? Maybe I can make a bigger dent in the 80 pounds I still need to lose before I can even get into a size large.

I just came across your postings after doing a search on Paxil and thyroid. Thanks everyone for posting -- I too, gained weight on Paxil and would have never known why but for you all.
Regarding thyroid issues, I think everyone ought to know that there is a huge controversy going on about thyroid testing -- most "normal" tests are not normal at all. See the May 2000 issue of the British Medical Journal for some wonderful articles and letters. Also, New England Journal of Medicine ran an article suggesting re-evaluation of the TSH test back in 1997. This of course would have a huge impact on depression cases because hypothyroidism causes depression.
I for one want to get off SSRI's altogether!
BMJ is I think www.bmj.com.

I gained 50 pounds on Paxil. I took it for 1 year , until Feb. 2000. I discontinued it because of the weight gain mainly (although I also got a high blood pressure with it, and no menstrual period for the whole year). I was perfectly fine until about 2 motnhs ago, when an apparent strep throat that required 1 MONTH of medication (!!) brought panic attacks again. After stoping the Paxil in February, I started dieting and exercising, and I have lost 30 pounds so far. Now that I am having panic attacks again, I am totally unsure about going back to Paxil, as my doctor recommended. Another doctor said to take Zoloft, but I've read in many forums that Zoloft also causes weight gain. So, I am trying something different this time. I went to an acupuncturist 3 weeks ago, and have been doing some meditation, relaxation exercises and controlled breathing, and also has changed my diet as to eat more veggies and fruits and less meat and oils. I can say that I have honestly seen some improvement. At this point I am not having severe attacks, although I have been feeling very excited, with chest pains and palpitations, but not as severe or frightening as 3 weeks ago. I'll keep you posted on my progress on this "alternative" method, in case anyone out there wants to try something that is not a medication.

Hi all. After reading all of your terrible experiences with this drug I can't believe it is still marketed as an "ANTI-depressant"- the weight gain alone is enough to drive anyone into depression...I actually quit Paxil after gaining 15 pounds on it, cold-turkey. I didn't have severe withdrawal symptoms and now am very very glad I went off it when I did, only three months. I am now checking out a combination of the herbal supplements Sam-E and 5-htp. I wish someone had advised me of these natural alternatives before I started the Paxil. I too experienced terrible sleeplessness because of depression, I just tried Kava Kava today and it works as well as Ativan!!! I also bought some Valerian for sleep, also an all-natural herbal remedy. I hope this is of some help to you all. After my experience with Paxil I am steering as far away from prescription meds as possible.
I urge anyone taking Paxil and even SLIGHTLY concerned about weight gain to switch to something else!!!! It really ****s up your metabolism and will only exacerbate your depression. The posts on this board are sad proof of that.

I gained 30 pounds on Paxil and Luvox (which I switched to after Paxil stopped working). I think that Luvox works better than Paxil but I have decided to get off it now from the weight gain. No matter what I do, diet and exercize, or eat tons of junk food, the scale won't move up or down (not even a pound!). Anyways, I am going to try to herbal pill, St. John's Wort. I heard that it works pretty good. Good Luck to you all!

hi.
just tried to post/register/whatever so this might be a duplicate...might be old news too. (new at this cyber stuff)
i went through the weight gain and asexual side effects with paxil-prozac too.
after no weight change whith various combos of exercise minor diet (only)st.john's wort and no ads i had no weight changesi tried welbutrin and the weight started to come off.
this happened before i lost my cravings for fats alcohol and cigaretts (but not sex thankfully).
my problem was an increase in anxiety which posed a problem because my original diagnosis was panic disorder and i feared for my job.
anyway, i've read that you can take it with an ssri and it could counter the weight and sexual side effects.
i went off and am starting buspar for anxiety in hope of starting the welbutrin again.
and buspar isin aclass separate from the benzos like xanax and valium so i might just have a life some cake and eat it too!
any thoughts?

Hi All,
I thought I'd follow up after my posting of last July. The great news is I got off Paxil completely, and have had no signs of depression. In fact, I have never been happier. But getting off was another story -- a miserable nightmare, in fact. After I finally realized that I was going through withdrawal, I went back on in August and then eased myself off over a 2-month period. That worked much better, although I did get a terrible flu during that time. Once I got over the flu, my heart really opened up, and I found a new place to live in the country (much better for us sensitive people). Also, I have been regaining my health by taking Silymarin, Undenatured Whey and Sodium Alginate to cleanse my liver. You'll have to research these yourselves -- I took the advice of an environmental doctor and decided to try it then and there. I also got acupuncture and took freeze-dried Chinese herbs every day for 6 months, and that really helped me warm up (I was freezing, even in a California winter). All this while spending 60 - 100 hours a week working on a book. I just finished the book, and while I am understandably tired, I am still within normal range, balanced emotionally and physically. My acupuncturist has also given me a clean bill of health. Now that I am back to having time to exercise, and am cutting out cooked fats and sugar from my diet, I am losing weight steadily.
So that's it! My recommendation: get off the drugs if you possibly can, but do so very, very slowly and with the support of qualified health care workers who take a wholistic approach.

I gained a lot of weight on Paxil as well. I gained about 20 lbs on it. Maybe you could switch to Wellbutrin? It might help you shed the weight you gained on Paxil. Just a thought.MB

I was on Paxil for three years and went from a size 4 to a size 16. I finally went to my shrink and told him I was ready to try something else because of this. I've been on Effexor since last December and haven't lost any but weight but at least I stopped gaining! I also feel like I have more energy like before the depression. As I see it, the Paxil kept me alive long enough to feel good enough to complain about it.

Although I loathe this fact myself, because I can't remotely tolerate it, my pdoc, who has this enormous practice of hopeless cases and is quite the med expert, says that Topamaz is THE weight loss magic med.
Perhaps you can benefit by this info! I am meanwhile slogging around with weight left by six months on Zyprexa---last year, sloooowly coming off.
Good luck,

The antidepressant I use is Serzone, and I have noticed no weight gain from it. I've lost about 10 lbs (the rest of the Paxil weight that I hadn't lost even after a year) since this regimen. Unfortunately the regimin isn't really working as well as a regimen could and will see new doc on Tuesday. Oh well, I was at my normal weight for a while at least ;-)

I gained about 20 pounds in 4 weeks on Paxil. I workout everyday (lifing and cardio) and eat a very healthy, well balanced diet. I had to be the Paxil. My doc also didn't think it was the Paxil, but I'm off it now. I quit cold turkey for 4 days straight and no widthdrawl symtoms yet! I'm on 125mg of Wellbutrin now. I HOPE I LOSE THE FAT!

Yeah, that stuff has the worst reputation among all the SSRIs for causing weight gain. There are all sorts of theories out there that try to remove the blame from Paxil. One theory that I've heard is that when an antidepressant starts working, the person feels better and, therefore, eats more, etc. That may be the case for some people, but my depression is atypical in that when I'm depressed I eat more and sleep more. If SSRI weight gain was simply a secondary effect to the relief of depression, then I should *lose* weight on Paxil. I did for a month, then came on the lbs. The part that is confusing for doctors when a concern about this side effect is brought up, is that SSRIs tend to (in the people I've known and talked to) cause loss of appetite *at first*. Therefore, in the PDR literature, they list weight loss as a side effect of these drugs. They don't, to my knowledge, when they do the clinical trials, keep people on these drugs long enough for the weight-gain side effect to kick in. It's not in the PDR so the docs don't believe it. But, it seems that after a few months (or years) down the line, the SSRI pulls a switch...then all of a sudden the energy it used to give turns into leaden fatigue. Incessant hunger for carbs sets in, and a 24/7 desire to sleep creeps up on ya. Again, I am only speaking for myself and for the people I've known who've taken these drugs. Everyone is different, and my little diatribe by no means claims to be universal truth....just *A LOT* of anecdotal evidence points in this direction.

I'm majorly ADD too--and Serzone was coma city, for me. The absolute worst of the SSRIs, which were all pretty bad. Like I needed help spacing out and help doing nothing.
YMMV,
