This may sound like a strange question but here goes: Has anyone out there ever suffered from sex induced panic attacks? I don't know if it's the adrenaline rush or over-exertion or what.

Yes, I did go into a panic once when I realized I had picked up a transvestite.

Cam, nice to hear from you!
Kazoo, I had a panic once when in college I went out with a friend of my best friend, who could only get turned on in women's laungerie (sp?).--Cindy W

Yes! I've had a few panic attacks like that but it was always with a new partner. I would suddenly feel very scared and hyperventilate. Since I've been married (and faithful) for the past ten years this hasn't happened. I do remember how embarassing it could be.

I am not sure as to whether you are a male or female from the name that you go by here at psychobabble. I would think that a female would be more succeptable to panic attacks during sex because of the vulnerability factor. I do not think many males would become frightened about something that they practicly live for. Presuming you are a female (correct me if I am wrong), might it be that a male from past has caused you to feel very uncomfortable during sex? If you have been sexually assaulted then it is very understandable to why you experience panic attacks. Might it be that your partner is not gentle with you or that you do not even want to have intercourse?
Other then what I have mentioned, I would not have any idea to why you are experiencing panic while making love. Good luck!

I'm male bud. Thanks for the response. Even though you answered on the side of women, men do get sexually abused as young boys. Maybe that IS my problem. Thanks for making me think.

I did not mean to call you a women. If someone has been sexually abused then it is very understandable to why they might experience a panic attack during sex. During sex, you are being touched in the same manner as when you were being abused. That "feeling" from being touched, probably triggers a memory of how you felt when you were being abused. I am not sure if you will ever be able to rid yourself of the panic during sex. I am not trying to sound negative, it is just that those memories will always be present. Whenever I get hit in the head - whether it be in a fist fight, while wrestling with my girlfriend, or just accidental, that "feeling" of being hit triggers memories of my parents wacking me around. I could get hit in the head a thousand times and I am sure that "those" memories would still be triggered - just like you could have sex a thousand times and "those" memories will still be triggered. I do not know if a therapist can help with this one. Hopefully though, you will be able to have panic free sex. Good luck!
