I CAN'T SLEEP

Posted by medusa on May 23, 2000, at 5:27:14

Hey Everyone,
I am having a terrible time falling asleep at night. I am afraid that I will have terrible nightmares like I used to. I just got out of the hospital for cutting and I am on lots of meds like Seroquel and Effexor. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS TO HELP ME FALL ASLEEP?

Medusa, talk to your pdoc. Also, you might want to try kava kava or melatonin or relaxation exercises or the usual sleep-inducing things (do relaxing things in the evening not stressful or energizing things such as exercise; go to bed same time every night; keep your feet warm; drink warm milk; whatever helps you sleep). For me, just opening an old college textbook about chemistry puts me right to sleep! Seriously, I know it's hard, because I have had trouble sleeping with Effexor-XR. After talking with my pdoc, I take a small dose of Serzone at night, and some melatonin.--Cindy W

medusa,
Has anyone suggested using Ambien? It works very well for me (in combo with Neurontin). It has a very short half-life, and is supposed to disapate from a person's system after 3-5 hours. I never wake up groggy from it either (which doesn't mean you wouldn't). I've been using it for over a year now for insomnia and can only imagine how many sleepness nights I would've had without it. I heard some people at this site reporting memory loss from it, bit i've never had that experience. It's like everything else though, works for some people and not for others, most drugs are basically a "crap shoot".. It might be worth talking to your doc about.

I hope you find an answer soon, I know what lack of sleep does to a person only too well

I hope this helps.

Greg

I don't know anything about seroquel and its effects on sleep, but I do know that for me, effexor, both the regular and the xr, have interfered with sleep. I have always needed another med to counteract these effects. I took trazodone for a long time, and then changed to serzone. I take the serzone in the evening and it does help me fall asleep and stay asleep.

Hi, I see Remeron (mirtazipine) used at bedtime with Seroquel (quetiapine) and venflaxine (Effexor) regimens. It seems to help sleep and additionally will help appetite if that is a concern. You could ask your PsyMD. As for sleep,
you should feel comforted knowing that you will do fine without deep sleep. You can lay down or sit in an easy chair and just rest and relax in Stage I sleep which is the interface between wakefulness and deeper sleep stages. You can keep yourself in stage I sleep, rest, and still hold your thoughts (not dream). If you do that all night you should feel rested enough in the morning. Eventually, while resting, you will go into REM and dream sleep, because your mind needs this level of sleep. But you may be able to program your dream thoughs. Here is how I do it.
I pick out one or two pleasant circumstances I would like to be in (I choose hiking or snow scenes). I then try to clear all thoughts and create a mental image of a candle flame flickering and burning on a black background. Think of the flame only - then drift in and out of your pleasant scenes. .....I hope this would work for you as it does for me. Maneevan
