Did you come off of it slowly or abruptly?

Catful - The problem with abrupt withdrawl is the short half life. Effexor leaves the body too quickly. Your body's serotonin receptors (and at higher doses, norepinephrine receptors) do not have time to adjust to life without the Effexor. This results in the withdrawl effects you have described.Effexor should be weaned slowly over a 4 to 8 week period, depending on how long you took it for. This will minimize the withdrawl effects.
Hope this helps - Cam

I'm with Cam. You should never go off a med abruptly especially when the body is used to getting it everyday. The side effects you are experiencing, in my opinion are a normal reaction to discontinuing the med so quickly. They should go away, not sure exactly how long that will take though. You may want to discuss it with your doctor, perhaps he can give you something to counteract the side effects. Psych-babble is a place you can come to and get info that the doctor's don't tell you. Theory and practice are very different. We'll be here for you though, keep coming around and let us know how you're doing.

Hi Catful,
I'm experiencing many of the same symptoms since recently going off Celexa. See Gil's message and responses regarding Celexa withdrawal in the May 8 archive, or just go to this url:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20000508/msgs/33036.html
Also take a look at the threads in jacquie's message above (Re:archangel). She's experiencing the effects of Celexa withdrawal, as well. I haven't experienced the light flashes, but I still have the vertigo and "disconnected" feelings, though not as severe. Hopefully it will pass soon for you.
Good luck,
Archangel (Michael)> I stopped taking Celexa about 1 week ago and feel horrible!! I feel very dizzy and disoriented. Sometimes odd light flashes happen as well.... Has this happened to anyone else????

Has this happened to anyone else????Thanks Tina,Cam, and Michael!!!! I took 1/2 Celexa last night and I literally feel like a new person!!! All awful side-effects are gone. I guess i'll just try 1/2 for a while and then continue by cutting my 1/2's in half??? Or just skip every other day???
Again, input much appreciated,
Catful

It's ALWAYS good to hear when someone is feeling better, I wish you a million days just like this one!I'm curious about one thing though, where did the name Catful come from? I just have a feeling that there is a story there....
Hugs,
Greg

To all the people on withdrawl from Celexa, HELP.
I was on Ad's for about 2 1/2 years. Celexa for the last year or so. I bit the bullet and went off cold turkey five days ago. I can't function! It help solve a life problem to lead to another. Now I know why my stomach hurts. I'm dizzy, nervous, bitchy, I tremble inside and feel shakey. I can't focus. For all those that have cold turkey, how long will this last? The pharmacist said to just stop taking it when I want, and the doctor gave the same advice. It is an awful feeling. I can't function. Work begins in 10 days will it pass by they?

From what I understand, stopping Celexa cold turkey is a bad idea. It has a shorter half-life than its cousin Prozac, which can be more or less stopped like that. Regardless of what the pdoc and pharmacist say, it apparently is not OK to discontinue like this if you feel miserable. Ask a professional about resuming the Celexa and then gradually coming off. I've had to do the same thing with Serzone.

Thanks for your reply. I went to see Dr. Bombay today and I have to start taking Celexa for the next thirty days, then start gradually coming off.
This process will take approx. 6-8 months.
I'm not happy about this but there is nothing I can do. I won't be able to return to work in the
condition I'm in. So much for losing weight and a sex drive! Let's not forget the ear ringing.

I just started Celexa last night 5 mg. 1/2 of a 1/2. The doctor told me that it did not have the same affect on a persons sex drive as Paxil or Zoloft. Is this not true and am I looking forward to anorgasmic life again? Oh no, just got my kids raised and would like to experience the other side of married life again. Anyone know if there is a anti-depressant out there that doesn't reek havoc with ones sex life?

If you just started Celexa from Zoloft. That is the road I was on. I'm Celexa for one year now.
Once in a while I have a hormonel urge to have sex. However to reach the mountain top seems forever, or no arrival at all if you know what I mean. I'm in my early forties. This is suppose to be a hormonel peak. My kids are not fully grown yet, but enough to find private moments. I feel that it is discouraging. I tried to cold turkey, but it made me very sick. I think of a wonderful sex life again but the body doesn't seem to follow. Also I gained MORE weight on Celexa than I did with Zoloft. Good luck. I take a full tablet a day. Maybe taking one-half won't inhibit you too much. In the end a better therapist and I wish I knew and herbalist when I started the drug.
I would have switch the therapist and started with the herbalist. Although the herbalist is helping me in leaps and bounds. My doctor recommended CoQ10 100mg. a day. We loose this in our body from Celexa. Also remember to take B complex. It will prevent you from being tired.
This is the end of the thread.
