From everything read about anxiety, I think I come under the GAD classification. I worry about EVERYTHING. I took 100mg of Zoloft for about 2 months. During that time, the jaw clenching was so bad that I added 15mg of Buspar 3 times a day in hopes that it would ease the clenching. That combination made me so spaced that I had to constantly force my attention back on the road while driving. I quit that combination and was put on 40mg of Celexa for 4 weeks. The Celexa has less side effects for me but I'm back to constantly worrying again. I've read that the only SSRI like drug, approved for GAD, is Effexor. I'll see my GP next week and thought that I would ask to try Effexor XR. Even without meds, I really don't feel depressed, I just worry (Ahhh!...the sky is falling down) Any info about Effexor for GAD would be greatly appreciated. TIA, David

David - I have not personally seen any articles on Effexor for GAD, but talking to a couple of pdocs, it seems that Effexor was compared to Buspar and Paxil (I think) in different studies. The articles (or at least their abstracts) probably can be fould through PubMed, Grateful Med or Medline.I think comparing Effexor to Buspar is equivalent to comparing an M-16 to a BB gun, but hey, it got the drug approved for GAD. Sometimes it seem that government workers - FDA &/or Health Canada - are too overworked and underpaid. They may also lack the clinical experience with medications, relying too heavily on published documents to base their decisions.
After saying all that, Effexor in very low doses (eg 37.5mg/day) does seem to work in some forms of GAD. Hope this helps - Cam W.

David,I'm currently being treated for GAD and taking Effexor XR 75 mg. per day. It is a pretty low dosage but my anxiety/worrying have been well under control for over 9 months now.
For me it has been a great drug!! I can't say enough good things about it. I love my Effexor.
