I take klonopin at night when I need to but i believe I have GAD (will get officially diagnosed next week). What kind of meds are out there to be taken on a "regular" basis for this? How successful will they be?

Worry Cubed - Here in Canada, Effexor has just been released for GAD. In clinical trials it beat out Buspar (not surprizing). It is non-addicting and after the initial adjustment period the side effects are usually benign, so it might be worth a trial. - Cam W.

It makes me VERY anxious, although I'm not sure whether that's the Effexor-XR or my mind without all the typical obsessions or my attempts to avoid doing compulsive behaviors.

James here....
For now a benzo like atavin so you can be a peace now and try an antidepressant (AD) which will take a few weeks to reach full effect. If an AD works you will need none or less benzo. As to which AD that is really a guessing game. The more sedating ones might be one way to go. Your doc will know doubt have his/her favs. At first it makes sence to go with what the doc is used to as they have seen lots of people on this med(s) Anxiety disorder can sometimes be controled by AD alone. Buspar was mentioned and if that or an AD does not control it then benzos are an option. An AD will treat the anxiety and underlying depression; the 2 often come together or mask each other.

For a lot of good information on GAD try this website:

It has a lot of info on treatments and meds.

Cam, I tried effexor a while back and it put a damper on my libido. Almost everyone of the ssris do. Amanda

Hi worry^3
Like James said, anxiety and depression can often go hand in hand. Those two are really tightly bound for me, with my depression driving my anxiety more than the other way around. Two months ago I was looking at a change in meds--looking for something to augment my nortriptyline/klonopin and help with some OCD. My pdoc and I decided to go after the depression instead of treating the OCD and it's working out really well for me: the ritalin I'm taking now is doing a lot for my mood, which is easing my anxiety level waaay back.
It's not the meds that are the message, but the approach. As others have said, you and your doctor can figure out what's right for you -- just don't rule out how depression might be tied in here.
btw -- is the klonopin too sedating for you? Is that why you take it so late? I take mine first thing in the AM ... otherwise, the "buzz" just gets to be too much to function all that well. Just a thought....
cheers,
bob
