How long do normal people sleep? Okay, maybe you aren't all normal (especially this duck person) but my pdoc seems to think I don't sleep enough but if you feel fine after a few hours who says you have to sleep 6 or 7 or 8 hours? Didn't Einstein or Eisenhower or somebody only sleep 3 or 4 hours a night? Somebody give me a scientific answer, please!

James here.....Normal is not a specific #, but enough so you feel rested in the morning and not tired and sleepy thru the day. If you are bi polar in manic or hypomanic phase this is not true.

I'm telling you from research, not from any experience. I believe it's 8 1/2 is average. I've never gone to bed, slept normally, gotten up and felt rested all day. If I did Judy...if I could Judy...I don't think I'd be a rapid cycling bipolar person.
I just keep trying. If someone could get people like us to have a normal night sleep...we'd probably get better.
Maybe we should be in a sleep disordered clinic rather than at psychiatrist office's.
Yes, you are correct. It seems like so many extremely successful people in life have been very short sleepers. Not short sleepers because they were busy at the office and this is all they would allow themselves to sleep, but short sleepers because that's all they needed.
Sometimes I wonder if these people were mostly hypomanics (or whatever that term is).
What do you do, other than sing to psychiatrists, when you sleep so little? (he, he, he!) Janice

You sound better-re my normal sleep question-how are you feeling? What did they come up with, (your dx) or haven't you heard yet? I lean towards the genius explanation for need for less sleep- but I need proof to show my pdoc. Since my husband took all my credit cards away and my passport- I use to go to really exotic places when I feel this good and stay in 5 star hotel suites which seemed to get everybody all upset, I don't know why I always sent postcards and brought home really nice gifts for everyone, even my mailman. I wish I had a friend in Australia so I could talk to someone at 3am and not get them mad either- for some reason my shrinks have never liked hearing from me then so now I just call answering machines. I'm also working on a novel which has gradually evolved into a screen play so when the movie comes out I'll let everybody know. If you have any other ideas let me know. Have a great day!

hello Judy,
I was in bed 11 hours last night………damnit to hell!
I'd be high, like you, right now if I weren't on all this lithium. There is NO drug that can do what hypomania can do for me.
Fortune telling: One day, we will all be slightly hypomanic all the time.
I understand completely why last year at this time I went cold turkey off of 5 medications all at once. very, very dumb...but I can understand why.
Today, for the first time (maybe in my life) I'm not high, not depressed. Stable. Only one day so far.
I did flip out at my pdoc today but he deserved it. stay tuned for a posting. Janice.

it was not so very long ago that i used to sleep but between 2 & 4 hours a night (what was left between work & socializing) six nights a week and then sleep all day & night on thursday (there was never anything going on on thursday & i always had it off from work). now, my sleep is a bit more normal, but i must say that i miss those days--oh well, the money ran out anyways.
