Effexor XR/Hair loss

Posted by Renee N on January 4, 2000, at 23:00:50

When I went on Wellbutrin, I feared hair loss, but had no problem. Since going up to 150 mg. Effexor a day I think the comb is starting to get fuller:( Has anyone dealt with this? When I used to read about Wellbutrin all the time on another board, someone said selenium helps. Is this true for anyone here?

Hmm...I have suspected that I have had hair loss over the past few years, and thought it might be age-related. But my mother says she doesn't think hair loss is normal for a pre-menopausal woman, so I was wondering if it is related to my meds. My suspicions about losing hair is nothing as concrete as yours--ie noticing more hair in your comb. For me, it is the impression that the hair at the front of my scalp, at the hairlain, is thinner than it used to be. My hair is very thick at the back, so I haven't noticed anything there. I am a little worried that I will eventually start looking bald at the front, tho this is a long way off.

Renee, In Dr. Bob's 'Tips' section, just key in hair loss and you'll get some info. Looks like the 'hair loss combo' consists of 100mcg selenium and 15 mg zinc...or thereabouts.

Thanks for the tip , Phil...and Dr. Bob! I'll try it and let you know what happens in a few weeks. I used to think alternative remedies were for the birds, but I am finding myself being much more open to nutritional supplements since I've had to deal with the side effects of powerful(well, I wish they were powerful enough to help my ADD symptoms:) ) psychotropic drugs.

According to comments in Dr Bobs Psych Tips, doctors are having success in treating antidepressant hair loss with selenium and zinc. Zinc dosages range from 15mg to 50mg bid while selenium was 100mcg to 150mcg daily. So apparently high doses of these trace elements are certainnly worth trying.
