what is an anti pschotic drug?

Posted by Ellen on November 19, 1999, at 18:25:55

I am manic depressive with a generalized anxiety disorder. I am taking Neurotin, Klonopin and Depakote. My anxiety does not seem to be getting better and My doc has suggested anti psychotic drugs. Right now I feel like I am taking enoug and don't want any more drugs. But I don't know the names of any anti-psychotic drugs to even check them out. If any one knows info would be appreciated. Also are they typically used for anxeity? Ellen

If it were up to me I would increase your Klonopin, that should help your anxiety. There are quite a few antipsychotic medications, too many to list them all, they are used to treat psychosis, hallucinations, delusions, or other serious thought disorders. Antipsychotic drugs may or may not be effective in treating anxiety, but are used sometimes to treat manic depression. I am not a doctor.

You might want to look up info on Risperidone, I think the brand name is Risperdal. It is a so-called second generation antipsychotic drug, which has far fewer adverse effects than the older antipsychotics like haldol.

Another try may be Zyprexa. It has helped me with anxiety and suicidal ideations. The only side effect I have is drowsiness but I take it at bed time and get a good night's sleep.

I feel that unless someone has a psychotic or thought disorder it is best to avoid any of this class of meds, at any dose, until other classes of meds have been tried. Short term is Ok (a year) but if you are going long term (years) you cannot avoid the possible neurological side effects and damage. To me benzos are a better choice long term, so try upping the dose of your benzo.

I take 100 mg of Seroguel a day. It is a anti-psychotic. It helped me with hallucinations when I was in a manic state. Now I take it for obsessive/compulsive behavior. I think it helps me keep from wanting to fly from heights (literally) and fall apart when I have to get up in front of crowds.
