I have been on meds for several years for manic depression, having gone from Lithium to Depakote and from Zoloft to Effexor. Though I'm taking my meds, attending support groups, etc., I do not seem to be improving. Someone told me the other day their psych suggested marijuana to help maintain that "even keel." Any ideas?

Does the psych give free samples before you have to get a 'script'?

Only if this was "Drug Utopia" or some other such fantasy world. I did read on this web site last night (DrugInfoNet) that marijuana does work for some people. Obviously psychs can't prescribe illegal drugs, but I know I'd be willing to take the risk personally if it would alleviate the severe pain and dysfunction in my life caused by this illness. Anyone have any serious comments?

Dear Manic,
I'm in my 40's now and often wonder if my anxiety and depression problems in part may be connected to marijuana usage in my teens and all of my 20's. My advice would be to avoid marijuana. It has been my experience that it tends to intensify feelings. It doesn't even them out. Initially marijuana makes you feel euphoric and on top of the world. That feeling lasts for a very, very short time. If you are prone to depression or anxiety you will become depressed and later the anxiety will start. Marijuana will instensify whatever you are feeling--not even things out. I'm no expert and this is just my personal experience. The only medical usage for marijuana that I'm aware of is nausea associated with advanced cancer and Aids.
Good luck and I hope you find something that works.Annie S.

The widely accepted indications that I'm aware of are chemotherapy-induced nausea, MS, AIDS wasting syndrome, and glaucoma.

Well I can only add that pot gave me a life.
I have add and Bipolar disorder and just for the hell of it I was sexually abused by my grandfather. I was 16 and was given pot for the first time. Over the next few weeks I actually made(i was living on the streets) and kept friends (good people who are still my friends two decades later, not criminals).
Pot calmed and slowed me down enough for other people to understand and hear me.
As far as I am concerned It saved me.
It is a drug and it has its uses.If not for the calming

Hi,
I am new to this board, and am reading it, looking
for solutions to offer my son, who lies in bed
all day, suffering deeply from psychosis, severe
social phobia, and depression. He seemed pretty
well adjusted before using pot for two years. I
wouldn't go so far as to say that pot caused his
problems, but am putting this out so that anyone
considering self medicating with pot can consider
possible adverse consequences. IMHO it would not
be a very good idea.

It is common that people with a pre-existing condition (often unknown) find things like pot and others bring the per-existing condition out in a big way. Had they not tried an illicet drug
this condition would of made itself known. With scitzophneia most are normal till their 20's and then have a break with reality. many are trying illicet drugs at the same time at this age so people say that the drugs did it. To me the drugs just brought the problem out for all to see. Drug abuse to me is not a cause but a sign of a greater problem.j
