lightheadedness/dizziness

Posted by CDT on August 6, 1999, at 9:47:55

My main symptom is severe dizziness (not vertigo) or lightheadedness from stress/anxiety. I've tried Paxil (gained 20 lbs and it quit working), Serzone, Celexa, Prozac, Wellbutrin (caused insomnia) and switched to Wellbutrin SR 150 mg twice a day. My doctor has added 2 mg. Valium twice a day and I take it on an as needed basis but it makes me very sleepy. The dizziness went completely away with Paxil until it quit working. Any suggestions?

I get pretty severe anxiety to go with my depression, and the Effexor XR fixed that for me first shot. It's supposed to be a stimulating AD, but even at the lowest doses, it calmed my anxiety entirely.

Lightheadedness and dizziness can also be signs of hypotension, so make sure your blood pressure is OK, and steer clear of drugs that list hypotension as a common side effect. When I was on Serzone, I thought I was going to die of some strange disease, because I couldn't walk across the room without staggering or falling down. Not therapeutic. Turns out it went away as soon as I got off the Serzone. Duh, if the doctor had listened to me, she might not have put me on that drug...

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info. Did Effexor XR cause weight gain? I do have low blood pressure but the lightheadedness is triggered by stress/anxiety. I'm trying to find the perfect solution without the sedating/weight gain side-effects. This may be asking too much..... Thanks-

No, I didn't gain any weight on Effexor XR, and have maybe lost a little, though that's not a good thing for me. It's fixed the anxiety, and I've lost weight. Can you think of a better combo?? Ha! Aren't I lucky to be depressed? (OK, I get the "look at the bright side" award...)

I have low blood pressure, too, and so any drug that lists hypotension is right out for me. The Serzone was dreadful! The Effexor has maybe raised it a tad (to about 100/65!), but not to any critical level. {lol}

Good luck.

>Hypotension is a drop of 20 points in the top number of your blood pressure or 10 points in the bottom number immediately after going from lying down to sitting up or about a 60 degree angle. It can cause fainting and the lightheaded dizzy feeling. I am on the valium/wellbutrin combo and both drugs list orthostatic (postural) hypotension as a side effect. I fainted at a mall Friday and received a concussion and Monday I passed out in my kitchen and went to the emergency room. I have an appointment w/ a neurologist on Wed. as I also have symptoms of MS. I also have reflex sympathetic dystrophy. This is a chronic pain disorder which affects the autonomic nervous system. I take up to 20mg of valium per day. I don't take it for anxiety, but for muscle spasms. Be careful and don't take the dizziness lightly. This is my 2nd concussion this summer. I'm taking a leave of absence from teaching until this gets resolved. Take care. Becky

After having a migraine and going to the ER, I've been lightheaded for almost a week now. The doctor says it will wear off - I'm getting concerned - I have so much trouble concentrating. Does any of this ring a bell?

Thanks,
Vicky
