I am a 31-year old male who was just diagnosed as being Bipolar II (Hypomaniac) and my shrink has got me on Gabapentin (brandname Neurontin).
Is anybody out there on this stuff and what do you think?

I am atypical bipolar. I am on lithium and a low dose of Neurontin (was 300mg per day, now 600). It is the latest, or one of the latest, in a series of anti-convulsants that is used for bipolar. I'm afraid I'm not on a high enough dosage to be able to say how it works by itself, but the advantage of Neurontin is in the ease of taking (can be taken without food) and minimal side effects (usually tiredness or drowsiness at first). My regular doctor told me Neurontin quiets the nerve endings. Anyway, I'm sorry I wasn't of much help, but I hope the Neurontin works for you, because I would rather take it than lithium because of the stomach upset I get if I don't eat enough before I take the lithium.

Elaine,
I used to feel sick about 5 times a week and vomit about once a week when I took lithium, then I started taking Gingerroot from a health food store with the lithium. No more upset stomach. Give it a try.

>Greg,
I am bipolar, and my doc put me on Neurotin about 2 months ago. I am now on 3000mg. As the dose increases I feel better. I am also on topomax and take Klonopin on an as needed basis. I struggle with very high anxiety and agitation so the neuronton seems to be doing the job. But, everybody is individual. I did alot of research on the drug prior to going on it and chose it becasue of the anti-anxiety components and the low side effects. Hopefully it will work for you as well. Good luck. Ellen

I was sleepy for
the first month (clumsy too) but I stuck with it.
I ended up needing an antidepressant at the same
time, but now I can acutally take antidepressants
whereas before it was just too intense. The alternatives are lamotrigine, valproate, and
maybe some of the other anticonvulsants. It is
tough to treat this stuff and I'm not sure what
the answer is. Tried lithium?

I've been on it for about 6 weeks. No side effects that I can think of - except my moodswings are a lot less than they used to be.
Looks like good stuff.
