We had arranged to meet early for a boat tour. Auntie Mel and I decided to work. The person at our hotel who gave me the instructions said it was about a twenty minute walk. Apparently he managed to look at me and not realize my probable walking speed because it actually took at least twice that. :)
But it was a lovely walk. Chicago was really putting on its best face for us.
When we eventually made it to the meeting place, many people were already there. Dr. Bob showed up, looking very casual. And Toph joined us in time for the boat ride. Again, Chicago is just gorgeous. And I learned more about architecture than I knew there was to know! I thought it would be dull, to tell you the truth, but it wasn't. I came home and regaled my family with all sorts of information that I'm not sure they found as fascinating as I did, because my delivery wasn't as good I'm sure.My favorite part of the day came after that. Very relaxed sitting at a picnic table waiting for those who were joining us after the boat trip. Just chatting. Nice and quiet. All Done joined us after therapy. (She didn't let us join her as we suggested. lol.) And Spoc and Rainbowbrite showed up at the same time. We decided to eat lunch after that.
Things were a bit crowded at the table because they couldn't move the tables together. And the food service left something to be desired, especially for Rainbowbrite, who missed her appetizer and got chicken in her vegetarian salad. I wasn't in eye range, but I think either Spoc or Rainbowbrite or a joint effort of the two led to a spilled drink. I thought it was very kind of her or them to do that so that I wouldn't be alone in spilling a drink. :)
A pirate walked by. We later saw him in the children's play. He apparently looked a lot like Lar, at least beardwise, and we waved enthusiastically. He waved right back!
I missed the coconut shrimp incident.
Dr. Bob left in a big hurry, but very politely, for a prior engagement. And right after he left, the storm clouds rolled up, the temperature dropped, and the waiters told us to huddle under the umbrellas. We figured either Dr. Bob was wise to Chicago weather or his absence was enough to bring down the wrath of the weather. Fortunately lunch was mainly over and we were settling up when the skies opened. We ran for cover indoors. But even in that dash, we all got soaked.
Toph had to leave then. We headed off to the stained glass museum, which was wonderful for me. I love stained glass, and hadn't seen it so close up. We also ran across a place to snack, play an original game by Falls, and post to you guys - and talk to Racer. We had been thinking of everyone all weekend of course. People left one or two at a time, and those of us who remained crashed at someone's hotel room (Thanks for the much appreciated hospitality!) and ordered pizza. It was just us girls by then, and it reminded me of the get togethers I used to have with my girlfriends in days long ago. That was my other favorite part of the day.
Which I guess says a lot about me. I liked the quiet sitting and talking times the best out of an overall wonderful and best weekend.
And that was all of it, from my point of view of course. We went back to the hotel, I packed to leave and crashed.
Maybe others could fill in what I missed or somehow forgot to recount and correct me where I'm wrong.
But that's the entire saga from Dinah.

I of course meant "walk" not "work".

Thank you for sharing. It sounded so nice. I wish I could have been there.
I'm so glad you guys were able to take time out of daily lives to get together like that. It must be nice to strengthen your connection to babble and each other like that.

Dinah,
Thanks so much for sharing the experience. It sounds like a good time was had by all, and I am enjoying reading about the adventure. I am so happy for those who were able to make the trip.

Dour sounds bad doesn't it? I meant stern, or is that bad too? See, my impression of Dinah was that she was a defender of civility when I was a bad boy early on at Babble. Like a librarian she guided me to civility enlightenment. gg makes a good tag team partner. The civil conduct dilema is a undying theme on Admin and will be as long as PB lives, I suspect. The the need to struggle has deminished for me considerably, I think.
Falls, I wish I knew ye well. Though I'm not certain, I think your appearance speaks more of a sense of freedom and self-assuredness than rebellion. I felt utterly comfortable and accepted by you and your warm disposition. I for sure will seek out your posts from now on.

OK, so I didn't get any chicken in my meal. I was trying to blame rainbowbrite and spoc for our mishaps at lunch. They shouldn't get away with being so damn pretty.

I think I have to stop reading this thread. I feel left out and sad. I was already jealous. Maybe the rain was from my tears of not being able to come?
Nah....
I hate being responsible.

Oh, daisy. We missed you.
I'm sorry I don't know what to say that might help you to feel better.
How about this? Next year when we get together, we can spend at least half a day shopping for shoes. And I'm going to pick out the cutest yet most impractical for you. No responsible shoes to be found that weekend (except maybe on gg who has some issues with shoes).
(((daisy)))
Take care,
Laurie

We didn't intend or want to exclude anyone. And my efforts to make those who couldn't have come feel part of the experience have apparently just backfired.
Now I just can't feel very good about it.
But I learned a valuable lesson for next year.

You captured the experience perfectly.
I'm sorry I missed out on the pizza in the hotel room on Saturday afternoon; but I'm glad I took care of my headache. Migraines seem to intervene whenever my brain senses I'm having too good of a time :-(It was such a special trip for me in so many different ways. I feel very, very lucky to have been able to participate. I'm proud to count my babble companions as Friends Of Mine.

I look forward to getting to know you better, too!

Dinah,
I think it is great that you captured the event so well. Sooo many people wanted to read about it. I said, "I need to stop reading" (obviously I haven't) because *I* was feeling sad about missing you guys. I didn't mean to make you feel bad AT ALL.
I think this is old. I'm sure it is stress. You aren't responsible for my feelings. It isn't your fault that 17 1/2 years ago I decided to have a kid who would graduate this year! Even *I* can't make that guilt work.
Sometimes the younger, petulent, lip-stuck-out kid gets out and posts. She was out last night. Ignore her. I do.
Hugs from me.

Wow, it's been so great reading about all your adventures in Chicago. Thanks, Dinah, and everyone who's posted with details of the party.
I wish I could have gone. I'm really hoping that I might be able to make it next year.
Glad you all had a good time.

Thanks for telling us all about how things were, Dinah. Maybe that was me who walked by, and waved. Ya never know.
And, at the risk of singling any one person out, I want to say that Annierose's setting up that first night's dinner that way, with gift bags, was a very lovely thing to do.
Whoever had the idea, oh so many weeks ago, to actually *do* this, I say, "Bravo!". And Bravo to all who took part. And most of all, Bravo Dr. Bob!

Ok, sorry to RAIN on your parade kiddies but before that version gets set in the historical record:

HAAAA so there! ;-) She's right though, I personally inspected her drink shaker and it WAS DEFECTIVE (do you think we can sue??). But shhhh.... truth about the tall chicken tale is, she ate half her salad then threw a chunk of it in HERSELF so she could get it free!!!
But I confess, it's true that I committed an act of attempted drowning of our fellow restaurant patrons. As rainbow and me stood on the seat during the storm, trying to cram under the table umbrella, I also had a smaller umbrella... which hooked onto the table umbrella of the people next to us and poured the whole accumulating canopy of water onto them! Hee hee, luckily it was just a bunch of silly boys who didn't seem to care much.
And hey, some sympathy please, it was me whose appetizer was forgotten and who got her entree about ten minutes after everyone else. *sniff sniff* do I have it rough or what!!!! (Hey, I told you, I helped pick the place so it's a miracle this is ALL that happened! What, no one with a case of food poisoning to report yet?? ;)
And Toph, thanks for the kind words, I must say you cut a rather dashing figure yourself. :-)

I'll admit to some green eyed jealousy when it didn't look like hubby would let me go. But now I've made it home safely with my head intact, he seems resigned to my going any year I can afford it.
So next year, I'll see you there I hope.

I do I do! you know, it was such a humilating experience that with all the therapy that I am going to have to endure to recover from the embarrassment of the incident... I think its well deserved. (scared for life) I dont think Ill ever be able to bring a glass to my lips ever again without reliving the vivid flashbacks of the exploding shaker :-( HAHAHA>>>But shhhh.... truth about the tall chicken tale is, she ate half her salad then threw a chunk of it in HERSELF so she could get it free!!!
GASP!! But you promised you wouldnt tell my secret! Now what is babble world going to think of me :-(
LOL I do carry emergency chicken with me at all times...even works at starbucks, although they tend to look a little confused.>> But I confess, it's true that I committed an act of attempted drowning of our fellow restaurant patrons. they loved it :-)

I just got released from the hospital tonight but it had nothing to do with the restaurant luckily it was actually the chicken in my purse....i guess chicken doesnt keep well...who knew?
