Re: Only three choices left....better odds!

There are three possible choices remaining for the answer to the question, which breed is most like the genetic progenator of dogs, the wolf.

Is it:
Russian wolfhound?
poodle?
shar-pei?

Correctly answer my question, and the show becomes yours.

It is down to three, from six. I have posed one correct answer among five others. Three of those five have been eliminated.

It looks good for you, dude, even if you guess.

I think one guess per person per question is the fair thing.

This one isn't answered yet.

The issue I raised is not one that relates to the answer. It relates to multiple answers by a single participant.

Upon reflection, I think your second response is invalid, as you have already had a chance to answer the question.

I have neither verified nor denied your second response. Others may use your thoughts as potential guidance, at their peril.

The question remains unanswered, although valid responses have narrowed it down to two possibilities. Russian wolfhound or shar-pei. Which is closer genetically to the wolf?

they are barkless.

Larry, if sharpei is not the right answer, I think you should probably ask another question, since ya stumped us :-)

Well, I'm glad someone spoke up. It had gotten to be a rather narrow field.

You are correct.

What would you have thought about Pekingese? Or shih-tzu? They are of the same close relationship to the wolf. So is the chow-chow, akita, basenji and saluki. Although the malamute and husky were included in the list of closest relatives, there is some contention with respect to their inclusion. They are known to have been bred by/with wolves in historical times, which would artificially inflate the genetic linkage.

It's all in Science, Vol 304, Issue 5674, 1160-1164 , 21 May 2004.

Your question Tamara.

question since she had said already said sharpei? That would be my preference, if you don't mind.

I liked your question. BWT, my dog, a pound puppy, is part sharpei and basenji (with some shiba inu mixed in there).

alex, a Shar-Pei? Let's see, according to the American Kennel Club, a Shar-Pei's temperment is:
Regal, alert, intelligent, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish essentially independent and somewhat standoffish with strangers, but extreme in his devotion to his family. The Shar-Pei stands firmly on the ground with a calm, confident stature.

Well, they got the snobbish part right! lol ; ) Toph
