I'd like to tell them why I came here in the first place.

Because I didn't have a clue what was going on with me.

Because I was given meds without a clue of what they were supposed to do - or that if one didn't work it wasn't hopeless - or that it might take more than one at a time to work - and that it could be trial and error and it could take a long time.

Because my shrink told me that the best treatment is meds *and* therapy - but not what therapy was supposed to do.

Because I had never been to therapy before and I didn't have a clue why I was there and what I was supposed to talk about.

So - I did what I knew how to do - search on the internet.

And I found answers to most of those questions here at babble - and I am still finding answers.

And along the way I met some of the nicest people I've ever met.

I agree, think of it as a conversation and not as something adversarial. It's fine to call me over, but I think you'll be fine and that won't be necessary. Here's the room:

But it seems large to me, I doubt it'll be even close to full...

I agree with Tamar. But you might be able to go to another session on Sunday if you want. It wouldn't be like ours, but it might still give you an idea of what the meeting's like.

Thanks for understanding, Dr. Bob.

That might help. I know that before I go anywhere new, I usually drive by the address the day before so that I will know where I'm going, and that helps me reduce my anxiety.

Adversarial...I choose adversarial LOL. Just kidding, I choose to think of it as a conversation with strangers in a big scary room. :-) Someone please be my partner so I won't have to face a scary crowd all by myself!

You'll come save me if people start pointing and laughing at me right? ROFL

:) if anyone starts laughing and pointing I hope that that person would get tackled but you could also start laughing and pointing back at them and tell them their toupee is lopsided :)

I don't suppose I request that my small group be able to hide in the back of the room?

I know this is early, but I start panicking early. I imagine that I'll be the only poster there. While I love to be alone, alone in a room full of pdocs scares the h*** out of me.

I'm thinking of arriving on Sat. May 20 and leaving Tues. May 23. Anybody else thinking of making it a long weekend?

I don't know about arriving, but...

How about you and I group together (others are welcome too) for a group. I have no qualms about making a fool of myself.

I do have qualms about making a fool of myself, but there's safety in numbers.

Me too. I'm seriously scared. This is going to be big, really big...like someone with agoraphobia going to Disneyland.

If more posters group together, then I imagine the group can get pretty big. I don't know if I can talk to a big group. You guys are talking to a person who has never raised her hand in class to answer or ask a question without her heart beating so fast she thinks it will stop. I raise my hand in class maybe once a year. I think I'm going to have to ask my pdoc for some propranolol just in case I can't handle it.

I *might* be able to handle 3 or 4 other people in my group. I think I'll be just as nervous around posters as the pdocs...people are people.

I think it might depend a bit on timing. Some people might arrive earlier and leave earlier, whereas other might arrive late and stay later... so the size of our Babble groups could be small or not-so-small, or multiple groups. I think there are enough varying places of interest that we'll be able to have a lot going on and keep groups at reasonable sizes.

I think that comfort is key.

Hi Deneb,

Are there requirement guidelines we should go by? I know that anything we do has to be approved in advance.

Any format and content assistance is appreciated. I don't want Deneb and the rest of us to come up with something that won't be approved.

Also, if you don't want handouts, that's okay, too. Your name will be on the presentation, unless you use a good alias, sorry, Poet is taken.
Then again, I'll sell you the rights to the name pretty cheap.

Dr. Bob, you didn't answer Poet's questions.

What are the requirements we have to meet in order to be approved?

> Also, if you don't want handouts, that's okay, too.

Should we take a vote? Who wants a handout? Who doesn't want a handout? Who doesn't care either way? LOL

I'm not aware of any guidelines.

But we should get moving on this... I think people who are coming can always say what they want to say there, but the handout is the only way people who aren't coming will be able to be "heard". So if you're not coming, but would like to share your experiences, how about if you either post something here or email me?

Another idea was to include the Wikipedia page that was created:

But it seems it may be deleted...

...post your thoughts, opinions and experiences here or e-mail them to Dr. Bob.

We can include them in the handout.

We are *fast* approaching the deadline for the handout submission...Feb.4th

We gotta move on this if we want a handout.

I live about an hour from Toronto. If I could get a ride, and get off work, I'd love to go to something like this.

If anyone's going to Toronto south on the 400, give me an email [xxx]

Am I too late to be interested ?

Sorry, I would have had transportation and everything, but decided I couldn't attend due to issues with anxiety. I can certainly recommend cool and inexpensive places to hang out, though. It's a great city of ALL SORTS - no money to too much money.

I'd be happy to be your offsite tourguide.

Toronto isn't just for presenting

I hope that people keep in mind that there will be two separate things happening in Toronto. That weekend (May 20, 21) there will be a get together. Like we did in Chicago last year. We can decide what we want to do in this get together. In Chicago, we had dinner, went on a architectural boat ride, walked through a stained glass museum, sat and chatted, got caught in the rain at lunch, went to the top of the [something or other] building to see the whole city at night, plus other things. It was a time when we could spend time together and find out that these "Babble" people are REAL people, and that they really are just like who we think they are. We need to start brainstorming things that we would like to do in Toronto.

The second activity is presenting to the American Psychiatric Association.

People can feel free to come for the party, but not do the presenting, or do the presenting but not come to the party, or do both.

I'm just afraid that people will say "Oh, I can't talk to a bunch of strange Pdocs, so I can't go to Toronto". The idea of combining the party with the conference was to make it easier for Dr. Bob to come, and to give us a chance to educate the pdocs. But the party is an event of its own!
