> One doctor has found that administering the trace mineral manganese (15 mg per day) can prevent the development of TD and that higher amounts (up to 60 mg per day) can reverse TD that has already developed. As far as I can tell, the use of manganese to treat tardive dyskinesia dates back to three papers from 1977, none with abstracts available. I can find nothing more recent than these three references. (Aside: If it worked, wouldn't the practise be commonplace today? Are the risks of toxicity too high?)
There is continuing research into a correlation between a manganese-containing enzyme (called manganese superoxide dismutase, or MgSOD) and vulnerability to tardive dyskinesia. Those with a mutant gene for this enzyme are more vulnerable to TD, probably through the toxic effects of auto-oxidation of dopamine.
Oral supplements of 15 mg/day manganese do significantly boost MgSOD at about ninety days of treatment. Shorter, high-dose treatments might be considered (like that 60 mg/day figure), but medical supervision would be a darn good idea. Symptoms of manganese toxicity are something like Parkinson's disease. People with disturbed liver function shouldn't use manganese supps, as bile is the major route of excretion for this mineral.
So, if your liver works okay, 15 mg/day oral supp is probably fine. If neuropathy develops, symptoms should resolve on discontinuation of the manganese, if you stop immediately.

hey ed, im looking for ways that i dont gain weight while im on zyprexa because it can be a possible treatment for my eye problem
I was first thinking of amantadine
now ive read something about wellbutrin. read this:
My daughter (16) also gained a huge amount of weight on zyprexa - 65 pounds! As you know, this compounded her depression - although it did help enormously with her psychotic thinking. Everytime I mentioned this to a doc and/or psychologist we got -"I don't know why this is happening", "you certainly don't look like you've gained that much weight", - or my favorite, "keep lots of carrot and celery sticks around!". Finally, by accident we have seemed to hit on a partial solution - although I don't know if this will help your sister. Because her depression was actually getting worse, her doc changed her anti depressant (she's been on prozac, paxil, zoloft, &luvox) to wellbutrin. Her doc said - "one of the side effects with wellbutrin is an increased energy level and a low appetite!" . I played this down with my daughter because I didn't want to get her hopes up for the zillionth time. To shorten this - her appetite has decreased and her energy is up - went out and bought herself a treadmill (she is too self conscious to walk in the daytime) - she's lost about 10 pounds over the last 3 - 4 weeks - which is a safe and steady loss. She's still on her zyprexa so things are actually on an upswing! - Incidently, she was on stelazine too - what a nightmare! Her energy was so low that she not only fell asleep in school but I had to struggle to keep her from going to bed befor 7 PM! The final straw was when she began to lose her fine motor control! Best of luck - keep trying!
will wellbutrin, stop the weight gain?

Jeroen you worry too much. How tall are you and what is your wt in pounds? Wellbutrin is known to have a stimulant effect and some say it helps with wt loss. But, I don't think you want a stimulant do you? Your Posts show a lot of concentration. Whatever you're doing is obviously working for you. Fondly, Phillipa

Do you think you might try the Seroquel (twice a day) before trying Zyprexa?

zyprexa first im going to take high doses because of my tardive dyskinesia 30 mg, but ill start low dosage 5 mg for 10 days, ill also take amantadine for the weight gain
it might work and repress the eye problem

Hi J,
>zyprexa first im going to take high doses because of my tardive dyskinesia 30 mg...
You might not need as much as that, I would be very cautious about taking any more than 20mg/day. You need to take the lowest dose which effectively improves your symptoms! -That might be 5mg, it might be 15mg, there is no way of knowing until you try!

I GOT AN PSYCHOTIC ATTACK YESTERDAY! ALMOST DIED!!
how it started? ive thrown a object on my foot because i was pissed at myself i wanted to let her see my broken heart and that i miss her to get her attention when she see my foot is broken, i did it in the name of love, very dumb ok i know but then i started getting psychotic, i got anxiety, loss of control, my heart racing like i was on marihuanain other words i almost died, i took 20 mg of zyprexa, felt asleep but i really was psychotic. strange that it happened right after i intentionally tried to hurt myself (in name of love)
im pretty much awake now, but if i stop taking zyprexa or take 5 mg, will i become psychotic again? this is the first time in my life i got psychotic, its hell man.
what should i do? go to the hospital or resume home and take 5 mg zyprexa every evening?
im sorry that i tryed to break my foot, i wanted to have her attention, its the only way

Hi J,
>my foot is broken
What did you throw at your foot? How do your know it's broken? Have you been to the hospital?
>i started getting psychotic, i got anxiety, loss of control, my heart racing...
It sounds like you had a panic attack after you injured your food. I doubt that you were psychotic, psychotic = delusions or hallucinations etc. What makes you think you were psychotic?
>go to the hospital....
I think you need to go to the hospital to have your food X-rayed.
Please don't hurt yourself anymore J, it won't help you get back together with your ex.
Regards,
Ed.

Oh Jeroen, I'm so sorry. You must feel very hurt. I agree with Ed I don't think you were psychotic, just very hurt and angry. Please try and not dwell on this girl. I don't think it is in your future to be with her. I just have that feeling that the right girl for you is waiting, right around the corner. Now, first of all, make sure your foot isn't broken, and then talk to someone who you can trust. Where have you been that you " are going home now". Fondly, Phillipa
