Hi guys+gals, I'm having a terrible time adjusting to the lex. I'm still taking 10mg at night, and I wake up with what feels like discontinue symptoms, (very weak, out of breath after taking two steps, dizzy, nauseous, and let's not forget my favorite, Freaky Brain Zaps!!) I can't make it through the morning (let alone 5 minutes) that way. I have to take care of the kids, can't just curl up into a ball and curse my pdoc! So, I take 50 or 100mg of tramadol, and the symptoms go away.. for a while. I'm trying to read up on the med (tramadol) and there's not alot of useable info. Sure are alot of advertisements to sell the stuff, in many different languages too! And there's this one site, opiods.com (whoa mamma!) that guy is TRIPPIN'!!! Anyhow, what I did learn is that it is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Which is probably why it's helping the SE's. If anyone has experience, info, a good joke, whatever, please respond... Thanks, Jackie

Hi Jackie, so sorry your still having a rough time. Below are 3 links with some info. If you cant find something useful let me know and I will look some more. Tramadol is also called ultram for more searches. Cant tell any jokes here because the ones I know would get me in trouble. But I will share one of my darkest days. Its funny now but not then. About 4 months ago I was asleep and woke up sweating and not feeling well. I took my temperature and it was in the 96. something range. I freaked because it was so low. I jumped up and got on the internet and could find nothing to ease my mind. I did not know that when you sleep your temperature can go this low. So I woke everyone up in the house and started taking their temperature. Their temperatures were lower than mine. I started yelling were all dying. They told me I was crazy and to go back to sleep. I refused and had someone drive me to a store that was open 24 hours and bought a half dozen thermometers. Come to find out my thermometer was fine. But for a couple of weeks I took my temperature every 15 minutes with a different thermometer each time. I also had this thing about scales. Yes I have 6 of them, not mentioning the few I threw away because they did not give the weight I was looking for. My problem was I was losing weight real fast over a months time. Over 20lbs to be exact. So suffering from panic attacks I thought I was dying. I have since gained all the weight back. Hang in there!!!! Report to your doc!!! GOOD LUCK!!! GOD BLESS!!!

Hey Wayne, Thanks for sharing your "life threatening temp. drop story" pretty funny now, but I'm sure no one was laughing then. I did report to my pdoc, who didn't even ask what problems I was having, just told me I shouldn't change my lex dose until it's been 30 days (I'm at 20 days now). Easy for him to say, I doubt he wakes up every morning feeling as horrible as I do. It seems as though he doesn't really care. He and his collegues at his office are participating in clinical trials regarding lex. So, he wanted me to wean completely off of 150mg of effexor xr (impossible for me because I can't function during complete withdrawl) I feel because I didn't follow his instructions, he can't be bothered with me and my SE's. I must have messed with his clinical trial, so, It's time for me to find yet another pdoc through my HMO. Pickin's are slim, and I hate to do this without a recommendation. I mean, it's only my brain function here, no biggie right? Sorry I'm ranting, but it's been too long to feel so bad. I just can't take much more. But, I'm hanging in till I consult with a neuroendocinologist out of state, and out of pocket "ka-ching"!! That happens this tuesday. To say I can't wait is super sized understatement!! Thanks for being there Wayne, your a real pal....Jackie

Hi there,
I've been on Lexapro (somewhat reluctantly and with many side effects, as per my other posts of today) for only a week and am not altogether comfortable with mixing in those drugs that fall into the "Tell your doctor if you are taking..." category. I refer specifically to: Ultram, Vicodin, Darvon, and Valium, which I need occasionally and take rarely. Physicians are awfully liberal with painkillers, huh? I thought that Ultram or Valium might help with some of the twitchy, skin crawling anxiety until the Lexapro thing (hopefully) starts to even out in a month or so. Still, the worrisome, racing thoughts part of me is afraid to add in stuff that could cause convulsions and such, so I'd love to hear if you decide to take it as well as anyone else's "cocktail" experiences.

Hi Jackie, thats a good part of your problem the effexor I bet. I hope you can get off it completely at some point. I know you have talked of getting off all meds. I would hope you would quit the effexor and at least give the lex a shot before you quit. As far as changing your dose I guess thats between you and your doctor. I dont really like the idea of you taking 2 meds at one time. Also throw in the tramadol to the mix. Im tied into one group of pdocs here. Ive been through 4 of them. The current one I decided to educate myself and do my own experimenting. I even paid $250 for a second opinion out of the insurance network. The jerk tried to put me back on a med that was slowly killing me. So now I just show up and get my pills filled and do my own thing. I hope you get a good pdoc!!! Good luck with the doc your going to meet with and let us know what you find out. I dont care if you get prescribed popcicles as long as you get better!!! Were all pulling for you!!!

Hi there, I understand your fear completely. I have just about quit taking my xanax all together. It mixed well with my lexapro though. I use it now for the emergency type situation. But even taking a tylenol or aspirin I only take half. You would not believe some of the stuff Ive seen people mix together. But for some it works, but for me I could not handle the fear!!

Oh, it occurrs to me that I want beer but then it passes very quickly. I was seriously abusing alcohol for a long time, probably self medicating. Now I barely miss it and have lost 40 pounds!!!
I began with a new shrink yesterday and she increased my Lex from 10 to 20mg at my request. I have felt pretty good on the Lex at 10mg but not as well as I would like to. I am living with the elderly parents at age 53 after going on disability and letting my house go. It is quite a change for an independant like me. But I am very thankful not to have that NEED for alcohol anymore.

Hi there, if your doing great on celexa why change? To get an answer to your question it would be quicker to do a search on this site. Good luck with the change if you go that route. TAKE CARE!!!!

Yes,, I was on celexa for about a year and swited to Lexapro last September, started on 10mg & then went to 20. I've had no problem with migraines & I tend to be headache prone also, actually I've had only a couple fo mild headaches since I went on it, and that is unusual for me to have so few.
Insomnia hasn't been a big problem for me either. I posted another thread (On lexapro for nine months) and detailed some of the other side effects I've had, but in general, Lexapro has been better than Celexa for me.

I was taking Celexa for a few years before I had to switch; I loved celexa until it stopped working for me. I am now on 10mg of Lexapro a day and I do suffer from dizzy spells and sleeplessness and intense dreaming when I do sleep. I am just tired all of the time because I am not sleeping well. But it has helped with my depression and mood swings. I guess tiredness is a small price to pay to feel normal. Good luck.

Hi Jackie,
I went form 75 mgs of Effexor to Lexapro. I had no side effects. The side effects I was expereincing with Effexor are totally gone and it's only been two weeks. And believe me I had a lot of side effects. So far the Lexapro is fine. The only side effect (which kicked in today) is tiredness, but that could be from a restless night, kids getting up, dog barking in the middle of the night, and husband out of town.
I think Effexor is really being pushed. It's a bad drug. I am so GREATFUL to be off it.
Good luck.

Hey Wayne, I haven't had a dose of Effexor xr for 21 days! Just the lex, synthroid (for hypothyroidism},klonopin for anxiety, tramadol(my Husbands pain med for a broken leg) for the SE's, and caffiene(several cups of hot tea) to get me moving. The last time I took two serious A/D's together, I came as close as I ever want to being completely psychotic. That was when I was trying to wean off Zoloft and my pdoc at the time gave me prozac to take along with the zoloft (Brilliant!!)I had one of those "I understand the meaning of life, the universe..ect." episodes. A very scary time to say the least. Chat with ya later...Jackie

Just wanted to write a quick update.
Went to my docs the other day, and he prescribed
some Ritalin (says that it's used as AD), to
give me some "relief". This time however, I
didn't rush to the pharmacy to get it filled.
I wanted to think and pray about it first. My
goal (which he knows), is to get off of everything, and start at the beginning again.Well, I am now at 10 mgs. of Lex (from 20-is not
bad), and I have enjoyed the last two days. I
am wondering when the crash is coming. Even though you can't prepare...Everything seems to be going so fast, and my mind
can't seem to keep up. My memory is terrible,
which is nothing new. Anybody have the same problem with memory?Good news however. Because my creativity and
energy, (amoungst other things) are coming back-
he's not sure I'm bi-polar. He's thinking about
my diagnosis over 10 years ago- depression/anxiety. Meds can effect you in sooo
many ways, that's why I choose to go back.
Little at a time. Sticking at 10mgs. of Lex till
next week. Sometimes, I think RX drugs can be
just as bad as street drugs. Have to be careful!
Super week to you all! Lord bless.

I take Lexapro for Panic attacks and depression. I was on celexa for 3 years and lexapro for 5 months. I have used different itch releivers like Aveeno and caladryl. Nothing seems to work. The sweats started over 3 years ago when I started celexa. It's one reaction that does not look like will let up. Thanks for the sleeping tips, I'll try it!

I had brain zaps too. It started when I stopped taking Celexa. It took 6 weeks for them to go away. What med were you on before the Lexapro? If you were on something else, this could be the after symptoms of the other med.

Celexa was great for me too. But after a few years it stopped working.. I started taking Lexapro. Yes, I had headaches at first, but it was due to clenching my teeth all day. I don't do it as bad now. I still clench my teeth a bit but not enough to make headaches in the evening anymore. I never felt better emotionally. The side effects are several, but they are bearable.

I have memory problems too. My boyfriend is always amazed and harps at me for it. I don't think he really believes it's the meds. My doctor suspects I may be bipolar too. Actually at this point, he says that I demonstrate manic like qualities. (which only happens when I forget a dose of my 10 mg lexapro). These are very powerful medications and it gets old quickly when you suffer from the side effects. But truly, Ive been at the bottom of the well and I remember how dark it was. I truly don't want to re-visit that place. So, to ease my mind, I remind myself that I'm taking an active role to keep my self healthy. And I will go through any lengths to assure it. If I don't, shame on me. Good luck, I hope all goes well. Prayers for you :)

Boy, do you ever tell the truth. Sometimes I feel the same way about street vs. legal drugs. I know I experience bouts of "why can't you just buck up and take it like a person?" I think that's the culture. I've made peace with the meds with the following thought: "I know what to do to end the depression. All that I need do is stand up, elevate my gaze (like look up) and paste a frozen smile on my face. I can't be depressed that way. I doubt that anyone can.
But when I'm in the fog I can't think of doing the above. My mind doesn't seem to permit it. And when I'm really under it, I can't even take the direction from a loved one to go through the motions."
So I use a chemical balancer. It gets my ship closer to level and then I can help myself. The hope is to get off the external stuff. I've done that before and it got me off Paxil. I had no side effects from the Paxil and my support group at the time included a PNurse who was very helpful getting me through the gear up phase; that time when you're taking the meds but it hasn't reached a critical level in your body yet and seems to do nothing.
After that I did better. I did better for about 7 or 8 years after ending the SSRI. You know, even with the experience as positive as it was from before, I still was reluctant to ask for meds and help. I'm sure glad I did. And I grateful for everyone here on this board who've kept up my spirits as I wait for the levels to build. Thank you. I hope I'm passing on the gift you've all given to me.
So hang in there, Pumpkin. Don't sell yourself short by not giving the stuff the necessary time to work for you. And remember the immortal words of Mark Twain, "You wouldn't mind what others thought if you knew how seldom they did."

As I've mentioned in earlier posts, this is my first experience with what my primary care doc and I believe to be depression and any type of AD. I know it takes different amounts of time for everyone to get to the level that will help them. Before that time comes, how will I know if the levels aren't there yet or if I'm just lazy, uninspired and mopey all on my own? I haven't seen a psychologist yet, just my primary care doc. This is something I'm looking into.
Today is one week and still no unbearable SEs. From reading the other posts I'm feeling very lucky. I think I'm experiencing teeth clenching during the night, but I had problems with that before starting Lex, so I just wear my night splint.
Thank you for your support whether you do it directly or indirectly.

Precious people,
The reason I found this web site is because my 23 year old daughter is on Lexapro for anxiety and depression. I was concerned for her and started doing some research on the drug. Even though I don't know you, I feel a common bond with each of you. I can sense your pain and anguish. My heart goes out to each and every one of you. I use to suffer from anxiety, fear and depression all my life for as long as I can remember up until 10 years ago. I would drink alcohol until I was stupid just to relax and feel normal. Then one awesome and wonderful day I came to know the Lord Jesus intimately and as my personal savior; I became a Christian. His power and love for me has set me free from the chains and bondages I had in my life. He litterally transformed me inside/out. Where there was darkness there is now light. My husband, too suffered greatly with fear and anxiety, which would lead to depression. He was a Christian, but had grown bitter and cold to the Lord because of a major betrayal someone had done to him. I believe he experienced the darkness because he had taken his eyes off of Jesus and no longer sought the Lord for deliverence and forgiveness. He went to a couple of pdocs and of course they wanted to treat him with a pill. After doing much research on the meds, he was too afraid to continue taking them because of all the side effects and risks. He has since then overcome the fear, anxiety and depression. He realized that he could do all things through Christ and realizing the feelings and thoughts he was having was irrational and not reality. For example, he would walk into a room and think that everyone was looking at him, or be afraid to speak, for fear he would say something stupid; to hear him tell it, he lived an utter night mare (hell if you will) any time he would be in a social setting. I even sensed he felt that way around me at times. There is hope, and Jesus is the answer. Satan has counterfit ways to overcome fear and anxiety, but his counterfit will only temporarily treat the symptoms and cover up the problem, and also comes with a price, when all along, he, Satan, is the root cause of the darkness in ones life. If you do not know the Lord, please ask Him into your heart and life. Confess your need for His strength, love and forgiveness in your life to overcome sin and darkness. He will hear your prayer and come into your life. Begin to read the Bible, starting in the New Testament. Find a full gospel church that has not been labeled a "cult". Ask the Lord to guide you and to bring people into your life that will be an encouragement to you and mentor you in His awesome Word, the Bible. I feel a love for each and every one of you, and I know it is the heart of the Lord who wants to reach out to each and every one of you. My daughter has not chosen to do this, but I know one day she will. May the Lord richly bless you and guide you into perfect peace.
Sincerely in Christ,
Jan (concerned mother and friend)
