Panic attacks left long ago also. Still got some anxiety, but this lessens as I face all my fears. Went to a wedding this weekend and to my surprise it went well with only minor anxiety. Am very pleased, I should say grateful and thank GOD everyday. I went up as high as 10mg but felt more anxiety and dropped back down to the 7mg level. I take a little xanax still, less than .5mg a day. I think I take it more out of habit than anything. So I guess I have to say lexapro has been very very very good to me. I am glad you are doing well Jim!!!! As always TAKE CARE!!!!!!!!

hi wayne,

so, in just 12 weeks, you went from generally freaking out and not being able to leave the house (and even if you were not the big Corvette lover, that would bum anyone out) to ....

GOING TO A WEDDING!!(!) Awesome!

(i doubt i could make myself go to a wedding.... but for me it's just lame, ho-hum, laziness ... more like social disinterest, on my part.)

and i read you're handling the regular bummers of our world without it amplifying into a major catastrophe .... that's healthy, too.

from how far down you used to be, well, i am impressed and grateful to have you hanging in so well .... especially since i have read how the anxiety can get worse with the transition-to-lex SEs ... the panic/anxiety. GAD, SAD, SP folks have to tough that out, if they can ...

hey, how's that 'vette running?

i am doing well ... thanks for the encouragemet!

and thanks for the update on you! Way To Go!!

stay in touch
and
TAKE CARE !!!! (!!)

hi okpolosi,

the carb craving, munchie mongering syndrome is so typical of med effects, hormonal / menstrual response, dope smoking, etc, that it makes me think ... well i have a theory that it's a form of self-medication where we are trying to adjust our neurotransmitters by carbohydrates ... (another theory: a leading cause of alcoholism may be trying to adjust neurotransmitters with alcohol) .... so at least with starches we can have less risk than with alcohol.

one support for my theory is an article i saw in scientific american:
"Sweet Medicines; July 2002; by Thomas Maeder; 8 Page(s)
Sugars play critical roles in many cellular functions and in disease. Study of those activities lags behind research into genes and proteins but is beginning to heat up. The discoveries promise to yield a new generation of drug therapies

unfortunately, folks at scientific american want to charge at least $5 to download the whole issue..... sorry.

so i'm offering you my Guess that one's period tips the neurotransmitter balance, which has been so neatly balanced by your lexapro, back over into .... that carb-craving imbalance.....
for whatever that's worth.

perhaps we should investigate nutrients to support menstruation, to help prevent or lessen the neurochemical impact?

now 8 pounds in one weekend.... wow ... i wonder if i even eat 8 pounds in one weekend ... i'm trying to imagine swallowing 8 pounds in one weekend .... well, i understand why you are upset ... may i suggest metamucil capsules, fresh fruit, and lots of water? ... this is my "new" wonder cure for everything (!) good luck anyway

A lot of GREAT info.....Thanks a bunch.

I think some of that 8lbs. is from water retention, feel like a whale, but clothes still fit.

Funny thing is that this is my 3rd period since starting Lex, and I didn't have the same problem for the other 2, in fact I generally ate less, and felt full. That's probably how I lost the weight in the first place.

Thanks for all who posted follow ups to my panic-stricken posting about gaining weight on lexapro. I realize now that I am also about to get my period and I always feel fat and get a little more obsessive during that time....Although I must say, the lexapro has helped a lot with that PMS exacerbation thing too!!!

Jim, I love your postings- you sound like a pretty cool dude, I must say!! While I don't suffer from the constipation thing, I will remember the metamucil cure-all !! LOL!

So, I haven't gained any weight on Lexapro after a month and have actually noticed a decrease in appetite so, I don't expect I'll gain weight unless I change my eating habits or stop exercising as much....so I'm just going to calm my little 'ol self down and say "adieu" for now...and thanks again to you all out there!!

Dysfunk - I just turned 36 and I hear what you are saying about age/weight. It has been so sudden though; I gained 5 more pounds in the last week - same food and exercise. Today I cut back from 10 to 5 mgs.o of Lexapro. Maybe that will help cut side effects, though I realize it may also cut the efficacy of the drug for the depression. I'll just keep plodding along - thanks for the support - I see you on Voy too.

I've been using Leaxapro about 2 weeks now. I've noticed some decrease in libido and also extreme difficuly with ejaculation. This is my first experience with an AD. My depression is at most moderate. I am considering stopping the drug. In other people's experience do the sexual side effects tend to pass over time? If so, over how long a period of time? How long should I "hang in there" while waiting for improvement? William

Well I think my scale was on the fritz, or I didn't read it right, but I only gained 5 pounds not 8. Anyway I am still upset about it and have decided to not buy any of that bad carb stuff, so if it's not around I won't be tempted to eat any more.

Thanks Jim for all your input, and good luck to us all!

In general, the side effects do go away in time.

However, I have seen many posts about Wellbutrin and how it has helped with this particular SE.

reads to me, with 2 notable period-related exceptions, that the answer to the question,
"Is everyone gaining weight on the Lexapro?", is no.

in fact, if the question was 'Is Anyone gaining weight on lexapro?', our little survey would have answered with the same 'no'.... (as in, *Nobody is gaining weight on lex!*) ..... right?

all of which should provide some comfort for our weight conscious folks, anyway. (?)

so.... Yeah! for Lexapro!.... maybe?

hi there okpolosi,

water retention!..... okay, that i can understand .... i can drink 8 pounds of water in a weekend .... make that, i SHOULD drink 8 pounds of water in a weekend (!), since a gallon weighs about 6 pounds.... and these days it seems we are supposed to drink lots and lots of water.

a point i wanted to make (and i don't think i did) is that science is just recently discovering the therapeutic benefits of some specific carbohydrates and therapies from these disoveries are now being developed.

i have extrapolated from this news that we may be subconsciously compensating our neurotranmitter imbalances by trying to use carbs on our inter-synaptic environments ..... maybe .... maybe not.

another 'nutrient' to promote is water .... i suspect that dehydration is worse for the neurotransmitters than it is for our muscles or our digestion, if only because the healthy electrolyte balance has to have a greater impact on our neurotransmitters ..... that and i tend to not drink water unless i make myself, especially when i get my lex SEs.

enough about me.... how are you doing?

take care !!

Hi there, I live in the sunshine state and have noticed nothing different with my skin when being in the sun. I also have blue eyes, blonde hair, but more dark complexion than you. Just use your sun screens and stay out for short times to see what happens. I live an hour from the beach and have not gotten the nerve to drive that far yet. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I used to live about 15 minutes from the beach in Ft. Lauderdale, but moved to the Orlando area the beginning of the year and now I am about 1 to 1-1/2 hours from the beach also. Just use your sun screens and stay out for short times to see what happens. I live an hour from the beach and have not gotten the nerve to drive that far yet. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I keep saying I am going to drive over there but may have to settle for the pool :-(. The pool just keeps the kids confined to closely to me LOL.

Hi DC, now I am scared!!! I live in orlando also, all my life. You can make it to New Smyrna beach in an hour. But then again I drive fast!!!! I to have a pool and my daughter loves it. Now when I go places and see a blonde with blue eyes and light skin, I will wonder if it is you. TAKE CARE!!!!!!!

Well, I have only two years until my son is out of high school and thinking about becoming a beach bum full time by moving in with grandma in the Keys. Free rent, can't beat that. Not to mention starting life as a beach bum just shy of 36 isn't too bad either LOL.
