Have you talked to your doctor about discontinueing your medication? I usually start feeling better and stop taking my meds and withing a year end up back on them. I don't want to take anything, but my children are too important to me to give up trying. I met my biolocigal father a couple of years a go and found out he suffers from bipolar manic depression. I've read depression is hereditary, so I was relieved, because my adoptive parents were always insistant that I didn't have a reason to be depressed.

I am down to 37.5 mg every other day and am going to stop the 37.5 in about a week. I don't know how long I will be able to function without any antidepressant. I have anxiety disorder and panic disorder and mild depression so I will probably have to take something sooner or later again. I also take Klonopin, .5 mg. I am going to continue that. Any advice about your experience would be greatly appreciated.

I just take a store brand multivitamin. Ask your pharmacist for advice on which one to take.

Hi JC:-)
Well, I was feeling GREAT, so in December, I just stopped Effexor cold turkey. After about 1 months of going off-I was having really bad mood swings, but I wasn't on a mood stabilizer either. I also had the severe depression aome back with-SI-and ended up hospitalized for 2 days. This was my experience. For you, all I can say is you'll have to see, I just hope you don't go through what I did when I decided to go off of the Effexor! Maybe a low dose of another AD would be better for you since you sated you had mild depression? What do you think?
Keep me posted :-)

Hi Napaba, I'm really proud of you on meeting your biological father. And to think you shouldn't be depressed? (according to your adoptive parents) wow. I think we all need to know what our genes carry, heredity plays a quite important role in mental ilnesses.
All the best:-)

Take it easy, Kristen

Okay guys........I can't believe I'm about to say this...but I think the Effexor was helping me! I actually went on it to try helping my aching and soreness. The dr. said the nepenephrine in the brain can cause achiness when it's out of wack. I am so convinced I am actually considering going back on it! auckck....can anyone tell me if there are any long term side effects or worries. Also, has anyone heard if you can take this if you are pregnant (trying, not yet). My dr. said that people aren't too keen on testing their fetus thus there was no research as of yet. Just wondered if any of you had info on that.
Sigh...........thanks guys!

Has anyone noticed that wine tastes funny? I didn't drink at all the first few weeks, and when I tried some of my favorite wine, I found a funny aftertaste, which I've continued to find with other wines I try. Hard alcohol is OK, beer I haven't tried.

I haven't tried beer yet, maybe I'll pick some up this weekend. I'll let you know.

*grin* I'm on Effexor, and last week I had a peach margarita. It tasted great lol I know I have heard that those taking Topomax, when they drink soda, it tastes like "metal" weird huh?
I wonder if the wine thing has something to do with, someting I heard, that red wine has a calming effect, maybe when you drank it it sensed the receptors working with the Effexor??
Just a weird thought LOL
Take care, Kristen

Hi, I take XR (Extended Release) which is approved for GAD too-that's why I like it-it works for me. I don't know where you are, but in the US, XR may be the same as XL???
Let me know if I'm wrong. What is the XL version?
Thanks, Kristen

> The reason I'm asking is someone I work with was prescribed Effexor XL for weight lose. I can't find any information on Effexor XL being prescribed for weight lose and if it works. I take Effexor XR. I've taken it for about 8 weeks. In the last 3 weeks I've lost 13 pounds, but I've been dieting. I think the Effexor helps becuase I eat when I'm depressed, anxious, or under stress. I've read many posts where people are saying thy've gained weight while taking Effexor XR. I still have 40 pounds to lose and hope not to experience the weight gain side effect. If Effexor XL works as well for depression and anxiety as Effexor XR plus helps with weight lose I'd rather take the XL version.

I have been on/off Effexor XR for the past 5 years. At first it worked really well to help controle my short temper. I was taking 75mg a day. But after about a year it seemed to not work for me any more and my sex drive deminished. I stopped taking it for about 2 years and tried to control my temper with out the help of any anti-depressents untill I could control it any more. Everything went back into a fog and I felt I didn't have any direction in life. I recently went back on it and at a 150mg dose. It seems to be working again and that things are much clearer again. I recently started back at college at the ripe old age of 30. My life now has meaning and I am focused on a three year goal to obtain my BS degree in Computer Information Systems.
Now the reason I tell you this is to let you know I am not shooting from the hip abou this drug. I am currently doing a research paper for my Psycology class on the effects of Seritonin Reuptake Inhibitors and what a better SRI to research than a drug I am currently on.
I have found out that Seritonin "plays a role in sleep, depression, suicide, aggresion, and weight regulation." This is one reason Doctors may prescribe Effexor as a weight control drug. Your co-worker, in their DR's view, may have a Saritonin uptake problem. Which means that in your nerve cells that are sensitive to Saritonin, the cell does not produce enough Saritonin and the terminal button on the nerve cell reuptakes what little Saritonin is produced and not giving it enough time to do it's job.
Sorry I am getting technical but again I am doing research on this and came across this site today and thought I could help out with a little insite that I have found. I for one haven't enjoyed the benifits of weight controle with the drug yet but in time I may enjoy it's many side benifits.

I've been on effexor xr for a month now at 75 mg. I am starting a 150 mg regement as of tomorrow. With the transition period between 37.5 and 75 mg dosage I noticed that I felt very compulsive, alert and had trouble sleeping unless I was absolutely exhausted (which meant staying up until about 5am on the first few nights). Those symptoms are gone now and normal from what I've gathered. As for weight loss, I was excited about the prospect too. I have noticed that I've lost alittle weight (clothing fitting better). I think this is mostly due to the fact that I'm not depressed or anxious so I have motivation to do things. I've started reinventing my living space through painted and redecorating. My style has gotten alot brighter and less dramatic.I seem to have a real need for projects since I started taking effexor. I don't know if that helps or not but that's my experience so far. I've also noticed that my menstral period is about 2 weeks late and there is NO way I'm pregnant. I don't know if this is due to the med or not.

I have to admit I was wondering how it could cause anorexia (that's what the website says) Although if it has similar effects as prozac did for me, that did cause weight loss. Well, I hope I have the benefits you did!

Hi juliat, I am on Effexor-XR and love it. It hasn't made me gain much weight, if any, at the most 7-9 Lbs. It works well for some. May I ask what your dosage is of Effexor? and how long you have been on it? Do you have a diagnosis besides depression? I have also been on Prozac-that helped my depression, but almost too much and I gained a whopping 60 Lbs:-( I had great success on Celexa, but at the moment I am only on Effexor, Klonopin, Lamictal, and Seroquel.
Let me know if I can help you.
All the best, Kristen

Hi Krissy,
Just started three days ago, at 37.5mg. I tend to be sensitive to drugs, so thats why I'm starting at such a low dosage. I found with prozac (which I was on a few years ago) I lost a lot of weight, but it came back on when I came off of it (probably because I didn't make the necessary lifestyle changes, which I am doing this time round) Celexa had very bad effects for me, but it's different for everyone! My diagnosis is only depression, which I've been suffering from since I was 13, so for 7 years. But I only recently started serious treatment, up until now I always discounted my feelings as nothing serious, and I was too scared to ask for help. Now I'm getting the help I need medically, but I am still looking for someone else on the drug that I could talk to, so thanks for your message!

> I recently switched from Effexor to Welbutrin. Had no problems with withdrawal. The Dr. Had me ramp down. I switched due to sexual side effects. That was the only side effect I had, otherwise the Effexor was working great. Wish I could say the same for the Welbutrin.
It may have been no problem with you but it is a purple bitch for me. I tapered off reducing dosage at the rate of 37mg per week. I then quit and I felt nausiated, headaches, general malaise, ringing in the ears, with sudden sharp disturbances in ears and eyes. I quit and switched to welbutrin for the same reason you mentioned, but as of now, I have been off all effexor for two weeks and I still feel awful. I don't know the answer yet but I will let you know. Any help would be appreciated
