Hi, I have a question which might sound dumb - what is the difference between Effexor and Effexor XR? Thanks to anyone who will answer this.

> Effexor is a immediate release which hits your body hard at first then tappers off, the XR is a time release which is supposed to put even amounts of medicine in your body throughout the day. The effexor is taken usually two or three times a day and the XR is only taken once. Hope that helps.

I was only kidding! You really made me think about our responsibility to speak out about our positive experiences with medications in light of the fact that, as you put it, often a controversial medication may be someone's last remaining chance for survival.
I was taking neurontin and topamax of course, and I was taking parlodel, estrogen, aygestin, and armour thyroid. Now I am also taking Wellbutrin. What you think? Sound like oceans of fun?
I read your question below about chest pains. I can only mention that I get nasty esophageal spasms every so often, I think from swallowing so many pills and getting careless doing so. It feels like chest pains. I have to take previcid until it goes away. Just a thought.

I know what Welbutrin is but I don't know what the other medications are for that you are taking. How is the Welbutrin working? My 9 year old son takes it with his retalin and it has worked wonders for him.I feel totally lost on these things. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Hey, Wendy: Well, this explains the hormones I'm taking. You might want to check out the whole thread. http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20010708/msgs/70085.html except that I was taking premphase and not estratest when my new doc switched me
>How is the Welbutrin working? My 9 year old son takes it with his retalin and it has worked wonders for him.I have had to play around with my medications for the last 4 years to get the best mix. The Wellbutrin has helped me with concentration, depressed mood, and depressed energy. I only take 150 mg. a day. I've tried getting along without it. I've tried increasing the Effexor and doing without the Wellbutrin. It just doesn't do!
The Topamax is for my migraines. I take 100 mg. twice a day. It helps with the persistent thinking music in my head, I've found. It doesn't stop it, but it keeps it at a bearable level. The Neurontin, 200 mg I think, once a day, is the neatest thing I take. It seems to settles the others into place and give them an extra little push. It really helps with anxiety and depression.
>I feel totally lost on these things. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks
I'm really lost, too. It has been hard for me to accept that I could look and look but probably nothing was ever going to make my problems all go away. I just have too many. I don't think it's realistic to think that I can be 'fixed' by medication. Or by my doc, for that matter. So, lately I've been taking steps to make things better on my own again. But the problem is, I've been taking steps in the wrong direction! I'm rebelling.
I'm very happy for your son. It can be difficult for children to get the right meds. They aren't able to speak up for themselves and I think just suffer side effects sometimes because they don't know how to explain what they're feeling. I bet your son is a pretty neat guy. I teach his age and I get a kick out of them. I hope you find the right med for yourself soon. It just takes persistence. I really do think I have hit on the right combination for myself finally. The rest I will have to do myself. I sign myself 'somebetter' because that's how I feel. Anyway, I truly do wish you luck,and wish I could help. Don't you wish it was as easy as it was with your son? One pill? Sigh...

Hello...I did not follow the whole thread so i wouldn't know if this has been mentioned, but i've read over the last several years that many doctors do not attempt to balance the estrogens (aren't there three natural forms ... esterol....estradiol...and a third i can't remember?) And what about the use of progesterone (not the yam stuff)? As i said, i am just reciting what i read and have no real knowledge about the use of them, but it would seem important to check out the balance of the three, i would think. Let me know if i am out of line in that you are all already familiar with this.
luck and happy to y'all.....john

I had a hard time putting him on medication. I just felt that he was being a kid. But I tell you, that was the best thing I could of ever done for him. He is so much happier and now doing so much better in school and socially. The hardest thing in the world is seeing a child sad, especially when its one that you love so much. I'm glad that you get to work with children. Sometimes seeing a happy child just makes life a little bit easier.

Does the effexor and the methyphenidate do you well?

I have been taking Effexor for a little over a year now and just found out I'm pregnant. My doctor told me there hasn't been any conclusive studies done that says it's bad to stay on it - anyone know any different? I obviously don't want to be on it if it will hurt the baby! Please let e know if you have been on it yourself while pregnant - or know someone that has. Thanks!

I was taking 300mg of effexor and tried to get off it cold turkey and I lost my baby.
I would, if I were you, to get down to the minimal dosage you need or switch to something like zoloft or prozac which doesn't pass through the placental barrier as easy and if so its in minute amounts.
I don't care what any f**king doctor says, it is still teratogenic effects are in the category "C",
which indicates it is not as safe as a category "b" or "a" for example.
The also have this phenomenon it is either "all or nothing" if you went to thru the 8 wks and havent miscarried than you are okay????
As mommies, we want that best for our babies, God forbid something happen to them, just because we listened to a mere human. Do what is in you gut, your heart, and your soul?
ask God too? It's YOUR baby and to him you are just a basic statistical-depresso and he is going by statistical averages that are not always fool-proof.
I am on effexor now and my blood seems thinner and I bruise easy. What happens if it affects some coagulation issues in your pregnancy? To , me, the 'risks do not out weigh the benefits'!
Educate yourself read , read , read and try to convey to your doctor it's vital that you keep your baby safe from harm and if there is an antidepressant with a teratogenic factor less scary. 10mg of prozac was proven safe for moms and zoloft.
Can you imagine if your baby comes out having to go through effexor withdrawls or neural tube defects or even something as simple as Attention-Defecit-Disorder? We don't want our babies mentally-handicapped with even depression or cleft pallates, club feet etc,.
God almighty, it will be something you questioned in the begining and trusted, then, if anything goes wrong with the developement(physical,social,mental) you are going to be GOUGED again and again in your heart evertime you look at that precious little gift from God!~warmest regards and blessing to you and your dear baby,

Hi. Has anyone had problems with extreme anxiety on Effexor XR. I started it in May at 37.5mg and when I went up to 75mg after a week the anxiety was so bad that I had to go back down to 37.5mg. I was still having anxiety problems and depression so I started to go up to 75mg 6 days ago and the anxiety is so bad that I'm having panic attacks while driving! I'm having to take a Xanax the last 3 days just to function. I thought that Effexor XR was approved by the FDA for Generalized Anxiety Disorder but it's seems to be making mine a lot worse. Does this pass after a few weeks or so? Thanks! Teri

Actually, it is an anticonvulsant. Look around in here and you'll find lots written about it. It has many experimental uses - depression, bipolar disease, anxiety, social phobia...
Unfortunately, I see many many unhappy children. That's why I find it delightful that your son is doing well. Many children have moms and dads that love them dearly, but don't get the help they need only because their parents don't know how to pursue it. It's not an easy task. Too well we know.

I am getting married in October and we are going to try to get pregnant right away. I weaned down to 225mg/day from my 300mg/day to start getting off this drug. I, too, was told by my doctor that there is no conclusive evidence of problems during pregnancy/birth defects. I'm not taking any chances tho, and want to get off of it before I get pregnant.
Due to the effects of withdrawl that most people go thru, I would work closely with your doctor on this one!
Good luck!

Hi Teri,
Yes, I had anxiety attacks frequently while on Effexor -- one thing I noticed was that the attacks usually happened after I drank caffeine, even a small amount. Do you drink coffee, diet coke, etc.? I learned from this board that Effexor increases the effects of caffeine by 3 times! If you do drink caffeine, try cutting it out and see what happens...best of luck to you -- keep me posted on how it goes,

Thanks for your response. I've read that about caffeine on this board also. I have been making my coffee about 1/3 regular and the rest decaf but noticed I was taking off like a rocket afterwards. I'm just going to try to cut it out all together to see if that helps. Just bought a case of diet pepsi, too! Maybe I'll trade it in for decaf. Are you still on Effexor? The anxiety along with the nausea are really doing a number on me. I've heard that for some people the anxiety wears off. Hope that's the case soon. It is lifting my mood so that's good at least. Since I've gone up to 75mg my insomnia is worse. I've been taking Ambien that helps but with this increase I'm waking up after the Ambien leaved my system. Yikes! I'm just really sensitive to these activating ADs. I was on Remeron for a long time but it wasn't really doing anything but making me gain weight. It did help the insomnia thing, though. Thanks again. Teri

AMANDA WROTE: Can you imagine if your baby comes out having to go through effexor withdrawls?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOY OH BOY... Good Call Amanda!!! Never thought of that, but it sure makes sense that THAT could happen. I know how I feel/felt coming down, as close to death as I've ever been. Can't imagine a poor tiny defenseless little baby, who can't speak up and say "HEY, I'm havig some prety nasty withdrawls here, could someone help me out PLEASE?".Definately something to think about
I absolutely agree about the increased sensitivity to caffeine. In my case, just mixing in 1/3 decaf solved the problem. Raises an interesting point though; why do some of us just shrug our shoulders and say "Whoa, too much coffee! This is giving me the jitters" and others feel like they're having a full-blown panic attack? And, in fact, they might be. Thinking back to the couple I've had in my life (thank goodness!) the physiological feelings are exactly the same, it's just how my mind reacted that made the differance between how I felt over all. My guess is that as one becomes 'better' (i.e. less depressed), one of the subtle hallmarks is a greater resistance to being rattled by things that just don't bother most everyone out there.
(On a 'sub-theraputic' 37.5 EFXR for 3 months and it's changed my life!)
Teri - The anxiety, nausea, and sleep disturbances are all start-up side effects of Effexor (venlafaxine). As your brain readjusts it's mix of neurotransmitters, these symptoms do go away. For me, the anxiety and nausea lasted only a couple weeks, but the insomnia bothered me for about 2 months and then went away. I still have some problems with anger outbursts (gee, really < sarcasm >).
I used Starnoc 10mg (zaleplon - Sonata in U.S.) to sleep, because I was only having problems with initiating sleep and it has an ultra-short halflife (approx. 1 hour). It got me to sleep and that is all I needed. I am no longer taking it, but I do have about 10 capsules left (just in case).
The cutting out of caffeine may help with some of this anxiety. I cut out coffee at first, but after 4 months of taking Effexor XR (300mg daily), I am now up to 2 cups a day (before noon, only).
I hope that this is of some help. - Cam
Hi, I have just been diagnosed with types2,3,&5 ADD. My M.D. a specialist in childrens and adult behaviorial disorders started me on effexor xr. Yesterday first dose=37.5mg, today75mg tomorrow112.5mg, next day 150mg. And then phone him to check in with a follow up visit three days later. I am feeling a little numb,my mouth is dry, slightly blurred vision up close and slight nausia. I have never taken any medication of this kind nor have I ever seen a shrink.My doctor, who is highly regarded in his field is certain that I have a genetic problem and I am not nuts.I feel some "slight" relaxing euphoria through this underlying "numbness",but am short on energy. am sleepy.I hope he is right that this medication will lift that dark cloud that has been following me for as long as I can remember. My anxiety seems to be already going away, hope it isn't all in my head. Is it possible that I am feeling the effect of the drug this soon? My M.D. said it would. Any thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Alec
Any thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciated, Thanks, AlecYes, what you are feeling is normal. But I don't understand why you don't go up on effexor gradually. Most doctors give 37,5 for 4-5 day then go to the 75, 4-5 days as they increase the mgs. Let me know if this quick jump gives you a bad reaction, like the involuntary jerking when you try to go to sleep. I jerked everytime I was just about to doze off into second stage sleep so I never got a real good night's sleep. So sleep as much as you can now because when the dose goes up more and if you drink caffeine you might have problems sleeping. (just something to keep a mental note of) . Your vision will always be fuzzy on this or any other like Effexor..,I used to zone out while people talked but then someone recommended a herb called "morinda citrifolia" and after the first dose I regained my mental sharpness and I could see clearer, my nausea went away and my dry mouth went away. When I got off the Effexor I used that to handle the withdrawl. Now, I don't use anything. That stopped my nervousness.
I get nervous when I model bikinis, I am a hardbody but anyone would get a little nervous modeling infront of alot of people. So my condition wasn't that bad, but coming off effexor was.
I do what my body tells me, if the medicine works use it but if it makes things worse just tell your doctor.
Some other doctor asked me why I was on Effexor and I told him because I would get a little nervous, my mind races, I am overanalytical and I feel like I can walk a straight line why can't everybody else(raised in military atmosphere). I love myself alot but I love everyone too.
That Effexor made me not really give a crap about anything or anyone but myself and I was not compassionate to others problems, my friends like I was before the effexor. However, the effexor did make me not so analytical, because I did not care as much.
The doctor told me if people have a few idiosyncrasies and are eccentric it doesn't mean they have to be medicated. I do think people who want to killl themself should be or people that hear voices.
Now, I am going to look up 2,3,5 ADD...it's like they come up with some new condition everyday to make the drug companies richer.
Now, they have once a week Prozac...how cute=) .
How old are you and let me know if it makes it harder to concentrate in school?
Does it hurt or feel weird when you roll your eyes upward as far as they can go. I remember that aspect of effexor. I thought I was building water pressure behind my eyeballs fron the effexor. so I got a little freaked out. It is like I always want to be in control of my conciousness and when something feels wrong with my body I get more scared.
effexor gave me a headache too.
Read the PDR about Effexor and come to your own judgement, because YOU are the one who has to live with the side effects. I felt all the things you are feeling the first pill I took and the doctor said it would take three weeks at least to get in my system before I noticed anything. The sleepiness goes away that is true.good luck~goldengoddess
So sleep as much as you can now because when the dose goes up more and if you drink caffeine you might have problems sleeping. (just something to keep a mental note of) . Your vision will always be fuzzy on this or any other like Effexor..,I used to zone out while people talked but then someone recommended a herb called "morinda citrifolia" and after the first dose I regained my mental sharpness and I could see clearer, my nausea went away and my dry mouth went away. When I got off the Effexor I used that to handle the withdrawl. Now, I don't use anything. That stopped my nervousness.
> I get nervous when I model bikinis, I am a hardbody but anyone would get a little nervous modeling infront of alot of people. So my condition wasn't that bad, but coming off effexor was.
> I do what my body tells me, if the medicine works use it but if it makes things worse just tell your doctor.
> Some other doctor asked me why I was on Effexor and I told him because I would get a little nervous, my mind races, I am overanalytical and I feel like I can walk a straight line why can't everybody else(raised in military atmosphere). I love myself alot but I love everyone too.
> That Effexor made me not really give a crap about anything or anyone but myself and I was not compassionate to others problems, my friends like I was before the effexor. However, the effexor did make me not so analytical, because I did not care as much.
> The doctor told me if people have a few idiosyncrasies and are eccentric it doesn't mean they have to be medicated. I do think people who want to killl themself should be or people that hear voices.
> Now, I am going to look up 2,3,5 ADD...it's like they come up with some new condition everyday to make the drug companies richer.
> Now, they have once a week Prozac...how cute=) .
> How old are you and let me know if it makes it harder to concentrate in school?
> Does it hurt or feel weird when you roll your eyes upward as far as they can go. I remember that aspect of effexor. I thought I was building water pressure behind my eyeballs fron the effexor. so I got a little freaked out. It is like I always want to be in control of my conciousness and when something feels wrong with my body I get more scared.
> effexor gave me a headache too.
> Read the PDR about Effexor and come to your own judgement, because YOU are the one who has to live with the side effects. I felt all the things you are feeling the first pill I took and the doctor said it would take three weeks at least to get in my system before I noticed anything. The sleepiness goes away that is true.
> good luck~goldengoddessHi, and thank you for your message.To answer your question I am 44 years old and long out of school but yes, I always had trouble concentrating then and now which is a problem when you are a craftsman that works with his hands. I am not a pill popper and don't hear voices nor have any desire to end it all and really feel for people with those problems.I was at wits end trying to deal with constant worry, anxiety,and ever present anger etc. everything that goes with the types of ADD that I was diagnosed with. I have an Uncle who is a professor of medicine at a major university in the midwest and he agrees that ADD does exist and my Uncle is no QUACK. I have been trying for years to "BUCK UP" and "just get over it" but all this crap that affects my ability to think clearly just won't go away and I finally got an explanation of why I have these problems that interfere with my ability to participate in everything that is around me instead of always feeling like you are on the outside looking in. There is a book out called "Healing ADD" or maybe it was "Curing ADD" which identifies the six major types of ADD. You might want to check it out and if you can't find it at a major book store or if I got the title wrong I will get more specifics for you. I read the book and if this sort of thing is real then I am the poster boy for ADD. Thanks for the info regarding start up with the drug and side effects and I hope I don't lose my compassion toward others,but to be honest, it probably wouldn't hurt in my case if I lost a little and started thinking of myself a litte more than I do.All The Best, Alec
I would love to know the name of the book and read it.
My brother's name is Alex and I felt the urged to talk to you for some reason.
He got hooked on benzodiazapines (like valium , klonopin,xanax)because he needed help falling asleep and as he got older he just got more depressed. I wonder if there is a link to long-term benzo use causing more aggravated depression.
It's also, peculiar, that some people spend most of their life trying to help and please others that they love and others don't appreciate it.
So those "givers" in the world are the ones most seriously affected, and when they get older they get depressed because they spent most of their life being told what to do and doing and when they lose that they lose their purpose.
When the whole time they should have been focusing on themselves and what made them happy. They are lost.I have good friends like that and they are considered bi-polar with some other numbers and letters beside it. :)
I read on here, that they can augment effexor, if you have problems with concentration with desoxyn, a methamphetamine. I heard by many many people it works great. It takes away the daytime sleepiness and it is not long lasting to were you have to worry about insomnia. You feel sharp and focused, which is a good thing. Further, it doesn't seem to make you jumpy either.
very nice talking to you~
> gldndodessHi Again, The name of the book is Healing ADD by Daniel Amen M.D. It should be available at Tower Books or Barnes & Noble although I have these stores here in the San Francisco bay area but I don't know if those sort of stores are in your area where ever that is. I am on my fourth day and now up to 150mg this morning. I haven't had any problems as you described when I roll my eyes nor have I had any twitching before I go to sleep. I have been staying up a little later than usual but once I turn out the light I don't have much trouble falling asleep and I sleep well. Felt really foggy yesterday and today I seem to be coming out of it. The thing I notice most is the absence of anxiety or at least a great reduction. I really don't think its a placebo effect, the drug really is working.The nausia seems to have gone.I have to phone my M.D. this morning to check in and I think he is going to up my dose. Hope your brother is over his problems. In regard to people like us putting others before ourselves,I agree with you 100%. My Great Aunt used to say "No Good Deed Ever Goes Unpunished" I consider this a very unpleasant saying but it does have a ring of truth to it. So I guess people like us have to strike a happy medium, I am getting a little better at those sort of things,finding a "Happy Medium". Very nice talking to you also, Thank You, Alec
Thanks for the help. I have cut out the caffeine and that helped some but I'm still feeling so sick and tense. I may go back to 37.5mg today. I think my body is just too sensitive to this medication. I'm amazed people can take up to 300mg of this stuff! Thursday of this week will be two weeks at 75mg. I tried to split the dose and take a 37.5 in the am and one in the afternoon but I'm still feeling bad. I'm coming off of 15mg of Remeron that I was on forever. Maybe I'm having withdrawal symptoms from that. I haven't heard that Remeron has bad withdrawal symptoms, though. I also have chronic fatigue that effexor was supposed to help but it's making it worse because of the insomnia, anxiety, etc. Ambien helps for 4 or 5 hours and then I wake up. Not fun! Anyway, thanks again. Teri
