For me, a big huge Absolutely!! I find it is definitely a different entity. It just has a different feel to it than sadness or disappointment or anger or other normal-range emotions. The deep despair and hopelessness, the indescribable psychic pain, the total emptying out of all that is you. They are pathological and well beyond reasonable reactions to real stresses.

I was explaining to a friend recently that I was stressed out, overtired, frustrated, sad, and just generally and thoroughly miserable. BUT I was NOT depressed! And I was quite pleased about that.
