Years ago I read a book by Leslie Farber in which he talked about a bitter dispute between an analyst and a patient about a borrowed pen.
What he drew from this was that therapy generally (maybe?) tends to encourage over-focus on volition and motivation (if those are the right words) and thus adds to the willfulness that is so overdone in (at least) western society.
Your experience brought this to mind. There's something to be said for not overdoing the analysis of these things and just trying to do it (accept or decline) with a little grace.
