Gosh, that is such a good question!
Typically my Therapist is very reassuring. He questions my motives for statements or questions, or asks for clarification before reassuring me, but eventually he does do it. Mostly I need reassurances that I'm not too much of a bother and he's not going to leave me out of frustration. He is usually more reassuring on the phone than in person. He has often said, "it doesn't really matter what I say. It is what I do that counts."
But if I got a response like you did, I wouldn't just let it sit there. I probably would say, "but you didn't say whether you would or wouldn't remember me, is there a reason for this?"
I like to turn the tables sometimes...
