I've read some more recent alternative and/or Orthomolecular info that emphasizes the importance of high dose (think 5 grams and up) vitamin C, in divided doses, along with additional antioxidants.
Hoffer was all about B3, mostly in niacin form. Pauling was all about C, often with extras (amino acids, E, that kind of thing).
Niacin for cholesterol was semi-popular in the US, for a while (from normal doctors). I think its still prescribed, here and there.
A Pauling approach to cardio health would probably require a lot less blood work than a Hoffer approach or the statin approach. I think the Pauling (C, additional antioxidants) approach might also be more compatible with prescribed statins, should those prove necessary.
:-) hope this helps
