I'm not any kind of expert, but...I vote YES, especially if the xr is an option. I think the xr has a 3mgs tablet, taken in the AM. That could help anxiety and low mood (to a point...), better than most other benzodiazepines.
Some psychiatrists aren't too gung ho about xanax. Ativan seems to be making a comeback, and...it does act quickly, its lasts a tad longer than xanax, and its good agitated states, too, much more so than xanax.
xanax and ativan tapers can be rough. valium is still popular in some places. it acts quickly, lasts a long time, comes in a wide range of pill sizes. tapers aren't necessarily a cake walk, but they're easier than with many other bnezodiazepines.
