In reply to Buspar for depression?, posted by Sheilac on August 20, 2013, at 5:30:16
Buspar isn't that great. Way back when, I believe it was originally tried for psychosis, but it didn't cut it...so, they salvaged it by marketing it for anxiety. Or something like that.
There's a risk of TD. Probably worse with higher doses and longer term use (like the antipsychotics). In a drug cocktail, there's no telling what the risk would be. Women, smokers, those with sensitivity to antipsychotics, those with mood disorders, and those on crazy cocktails would probably be at higher risk.
Old school shrinks do use it with an antidepressant to help boost the antidepressant. Sort of like docs today will use low dose Abilify, only its much cheaper and probably much safer, depending on the dose.
I doubt that BuSpar alone would help depression, unless relatively minor anxiety is the main problem and you haven't been on benzos before (Buspar doesn't do much for anxiety if you've had prior exposure to benzos).
