You are right. As you say, selegiline was first synthesized in the mid 1960s. I only remember that it was in the early 1980s before large numbers of clinical trials began for depression. It sucked. So they went back to some earlier work with Parkinsons to justify investigations into that disease and applying to the FDA for that indication.
It is hard to know what to make of selegiline as an antioxidant and neuroprotectant. The bulk of the work on this issue describe it as having a positive effect in these areas. I believe that there is something to it. What I want to know is if any of the other MAOIs produce the same protections. I know work is currently underway looking at rasagiline. However, there is NO work appearing on Medline that describes investigations of Nardil, Parnate, Eutonyl, or Marplan relating to aging and neuroprotection.
I guess the most convincing work regarding selegiline is some of the earliest where the lifespan of rodents was extended by it.
