In reply to paxil - permanent hell ?????, posted by belljar on July 2, 2007, at 15:23:09
I've been through all of that, including the diagnosis of bipolar which in my opinion was a reaction to the constant withdrawl and reintroduction of an SSRI.
There are a few things I can recomend to try and get some sanity back.
I was able to keep my SSRI dose to a minimum with the addition of certain supplements (taurine, omega-3, magnesium, folic acid etc).
I eventually got off the SSRI's, although there is still a void.
I too am in math (I hope to be a math teacher), so I can fully relate to the loosing of your math skills.
I cannot say for absolute certain, but in most cases, the memory impairment is functional, it will probably return when you begin to achieve some more ballance in your life.
Other herbs which may also help (which I have found to help are), chasteberry, black cohosh, SJW (although don't take it concurrently with paxil), and some others.
Some people also find help with 5-htp, (amino acid precursor to serotonin)
You may want to experiement with certain supplements, I would personally recomend taurine, magnesium, and omega-3.Paxil is particularly hard to discontinue on account of its short half life. Some people report sucess by swiching to prozac (very long half life) and then discontinuing, as it comes out of your system very slowly.
Exercise can also help greatly, and can say that a lot will come back. Occasionally, meds can mask nutrient deficiancies which may be more to blame for memory impariment etc.
I wish you luck.
