Depakote may not be sufficiant on its own to control depression if this is a prominant symptom. Ie more prominant than manic symptoms. I was diagnosed with bipolar and put on depakote and off an antidepressnat. The depakote left me very flat. It helped mood changes but not depression very well at all. I hope you fair better.

That is if you are actually bipolar. "The way it should" is doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There is not a lot of conclusive data that treating bipolar with AD's is any more effective than treating it with just mood stabilizer alone.
Remeron can also make some unipolar people very irritable. Ie. REM rage. If you are getting a lot of ittirability or dysphoria, this may be a side effect of remeron and not indicative of bipolar.
I hope that mood stabilizers work out for you, but I would not go so far as to make these diagnosis so cut and dry.
