They're supposed to be quite similar, I think. I've tried each of them a couple of different times over the years. For me, 50 mg amisulpride tended to make me sleepy. I tried splitting the tablets in halfs, or quarters, but I never seemed to find a dose that was helpful.
The sulpiride's affect was subtle, but seemed to brighten my mood a little. As I said, it was subtle, but definitely noticeable (sp?) & worthwhile.
Of course, ymmv applies...
Ironically, I had expected the opposite, (that ami would work better) since amisulpride was specifically approved (in Italy at least) for dysthymia, which is my dx.
If you can get the sulpiride easier, it might be worth trying first. I experienced no side effects on the sulpiride (and only sedation on amisulpride). Sulpiride may also be cheaper (since it's older & possibly locally available?)... And personally, I also found that it kicked in, in a few days (though amisulpride also has a reputation for working quickly). I took 150 mg Sulpiride (50 mg 3x daily) - never really tried lower doses, even though I always intended to do so...
My current pdoc is uncomfortable dealing w/either, since they're not fda approved. So I've just begun a trial of abilify, in addition to 300 mg wellbutrin xl. I'm starting with only 2.5 mg of abilify, because the wellbutrin interferes w/the metabolism of the abilify, which makes it work like a larger dose than 2.5 mg (at least I think that's how it works). Abilify's mechanism is different than the other 2, but it too works on the dopamine system.
Hope you can make some sense of my ramblings...
