Hi Marty,

I'm currently being presccribed moclobemide for depression/anxiety. I'll try and share what I know about moc!

Okay well, on paper moc sounds like a wonder drug. Sparse side effects, and a MAOI with little diet considerations. But alas, in real life it isn't as simple as that.

I know from the archives here that it sent Scott into a deep deep depression. Some others (who I can't remember the names of) took at and didn't feel anything at all - no side effects, but no AD effects either, they desrcibed it as a sugar pill!! Others here have been on it for four years and it pooped out. And others have found that it was great for them.

I get the impression that its sort of notorious for not really working that well as an AD in some people. Its been described as 'gentle'. Also, many people have found that you need to go pretty high with the dosages to get an effect - usually above the 600mg/day recommendation (up to 1200mg I believe). I think that this drug has probably been overlooked by many docs, simply because of the SSRI band wagon.

As for the FDA, well the story goes that the drug companies just didn't want to invest millions of dollars getting it throught the approval process because at that point in time, the patent was going to expire and it was going to go generic in one or two years, and wouldn't be worth the drug companies investment. So you can't get it in the USA. However, I have heard that docs in the US can ring up pharmacies/docs in countries that do have it approved (eg Canada, Europe) and get it that way.

I think there have been some instances of moc poop-out. But then, that happens with alot of pysch drugs.

I got a bunch of side effects when taking it - rash on my hands, headache, dizziness and light headedness. And thats was only on 150mg/day!!!!!!

I would say that it isn't as 'strong' as parnate, so it might be a disappointment to you. It inhibits 80% of MAO-A and 20% of B, meaning that it has slightly more effect on noradrenaline and sertonin than on dopamine. So I understand anyway.

You have to take the moc several days a day as it has a pretty short half life, something like 2-5 hours so I haven't been on it for long enough to know whether it 'feels' up and down during the day.

I'd be interested to know what others opioions are regarding this drug - there isn't that much available in the archives as I guess its not availble in the states.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Kind regards

Meri
