I really don't think an AD would mask the symptoms of hormone deficiency. In fact if you have a hormone deficiency, the ADs usually don't work as well. Men who are hypogonadal don't respond to regular antidepressants. Hormone replacement is essential if there is a proven, abnormal deficiency. I have two proven hormone deficiencies and the hormones have done what no AD could: get me staying awake all day. Like Phillipa says, get your hormones tested ASAP if there is a question about it and don't hesitate to replace them if a deficiency is proven.
Psychiatrists sometimes confuse hormonal illnesses for major psychiatric illnesses. A lot of hypothyroid people are depressed and anxious. I found that with Synthroid a lot of my anxiety just melted away. And, depression--what depression? I am scheduled to go off my AD in a few months.
