In reply to Cymbalta - how does it work?, posted by Interested on June 25, 2005, at 12:42:00
As I understand it, it's a feedback loop. Adrenaline, or epinephrine, is produced in the adrenals in response to cortisol and fight/flight. It eventually converts to dopamine, then NE which then affects the cortisol response. NE or adrenaline is definitely stimulating and will provoke anxiety if too much.
Cymbalta has a very strong NE kick that hits almost immediately which is the main claim for it's 'novelty' effect. It supposedly becomes more serotonin dominant the higher the dose, but I could never withstand anything except a micro dose. I'm at 8mg after 5 months and doing quite well on it but the few times I bumped it to 30mg was horrible. My extreme symtpoms were classic too much NE. - Barbara
> Can anyone explain in layman's terms (I have trouble reading the pharmacology in the PDR) what Cymbalta does regarding norepinephrine? Also, can you explain the effect that norepinephrine has on the body? Doesn't it convert to epinephrine, which is essentially adrenaline?
