In reply to Is DXM a dopamine or serotonin reptake inhibitor?, posted by mmcconathy on August 22, 2004, at 15:13:03
Dextromethorphan inhibits the reuptake of serotonin but not dopamine. Several years ago, there was some speculation that DXM might inhibit the dopamine transporter; however, this claim was never substantiated. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9105700&dopt=Abstract for evidence that suggests that DXM inhibits the serotonin transporter. DXM is also an NMDA antagonist, a sigma-1 receptor agonist, and a sigma-2 receptor agonist. It binds with less affinity to the NMDA channel and to sigma-2 receptors. Its metabolite, dextrorphan, is also an NMDA antagonist and a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.
