In reply to Question for Chemist: lamictal and weight loss, posted by Rachel Terese on May 8, 2004, at 9:27:00
> Hi- I wrote about a week ago about the sever depression I was suffering ago while on lamictal. Since then I've been on 100mg of lamictal and am supposed to start taking 200mg/day on Monday. I'm also on 2mg/Klonopin, 20/paxil and now 18mg/Concerta. I am starting to feel a lot better and more stable. I like the way Concerta doesn't make me feel dopey or drugged. I hope I can remain on it for quite some time. The one problem I have is that I've lost a considerable amount of weight over the last week.. 10lbs and every day another pound seems to come off. I'm slightly worried as I'm 5'5" and now only 102lbs from my usual 114. Is this a normal side effect of these medications? Also, what do you think of this cocktail? I'm a little concerned the paxil will make me a little manic. Does this happen to people who take it along with 200mg/lamictal? sorry for the rambling and thanks so much for your help! Rachel
hello rachel....it appears as if you are headed up on lamictal to the dose that (from what i have read) is the one that is most frequently defined as ``therapeutic,'' although this varies from person to person. i used paxil for a while, and found it very activating at 20 mg bid, i.e., 40 mg/day, and found that for me, parnate was a better choice than paxil. the thing that sticks out most - to me - to be the cause of your weight loss is the concerta, which is a stimulant and thus weight-loss is associated with this drug. in my experience with paxil, the activation decreased my desire to eat, but i didn't shed the pounds as rapidly as you decribe. in summary, in my opinion, i can only state that the concerta is contributing most to your rapid weight-loss, and perhaps if you are sensative to paxil, it is contributing either my activation or by some unpleasant nausea or stomach-upset as your body gets used to the regimen.....all the best, chemist
