In reply to Panic disorder only?, posted by Edgefield on February 25, 2004, at 17:39:42
Hi Edgefield,
I have had panic disorder for about a year now. In December I started taking 10 mg of Lexapro, ever since increasing my dose to 15 mg I haven't had a single panic attack. It's been wonderful!
The other nice thing about Lexapro is that it's an antidepressant. I didn't realize it but the panic disorder had caused me to become depressed (withdrawn from friends, uninterested in activities I used to enjoy etc...) Lexapro has gradually given me my life back, and I'm very grateful.
You might also look in to Paxil. I didn't have a lot of success with it but everyone is different and there are some people who swear by Paxil.
Other meds for panic attacks: Xanax, Lorazepam and Klonopin. I've used all of them on an as needed basis (usually when I feel a panic attack coming on) and they work very well in helping me relax.
If you're anti-medication there are a lot of self help books on the subject. I tried one, it had a lot of useful information about Panic Disorder but the techniques for helping with a panic attack weren't helpful for me. It was called "An End to Panic" by Elzeke Zuercher-White. Another one that comes highly recommended by people is "Anxiety, Phobias and Panic" by Reneau Z. Peurifoy.
Panic disorder is awful to live with. I hope you find a solution that works for you. Best of luck!
K.
