Your doctor's comment about Lexapro increasing both norepinephrine and serotonin levels doesn't make sense to me - Lex is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), like Prozac (which was the first SSRI). The drugs before Prozac did inhibit both norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake, but Lex is not in that category.
I also noticed some irritability for a few weeks after starting Lex, although it was not very extreme. If it's not too bad you might try waiting a bit longer, but on the other hand, I'm not your doctor.
