I have a similar diagnosis, and have taken lamictal. It is a decent mood-stabilizer but did nothing for my anxiety.
You might want to try buspar, or an SSRI if it doesn't cause mania. Low dosages of antipsychotics like zyprexa can control anxiety well.
Personally, I use lorazapan (ativan) to control my anxiety. It is probably a better benzo for chronic anxiety than xanax because it doesn't wear off as fast.
Anxiety is horrible, and your doctor should be helping you with it. The fact that you have been on xanax for a year without abusing it (i.e. increasing the dosage to get high) should prove to your doctor that you can take benzos responsibly.
If you stayed on the same dose of xanax for a year without increasing it your doctor should
