I had success with Effexor in the past, then something changed and it made me feel terrible when taking it. I had almost the exact same effects when I tried Elavil next (it was prescribed to hopefully help the slight ringing in my ears but it made it worse while I was on it). I don't think my reaction was very common though, so I don't want to discourage you from taking it.
But just so you are aware, Elavil is thought to have the exact same action (and other actions as well) as SSRI's, actually moreso similar to Effexor in that it inhibits serotonin reuptake.
Maybe if you are worried about that kind of action on serotonin you would want to look into an MAOI? I personally don't think you should worry to much about SSRI's as they are currently helping hundreds of thousands of people live normal lives. If I didn't have bad reactions to it like I used to I would definitely be on Effexor right now (still might look into getting back on it but very slowly at a low dose and possibly with a mood stabilizer added) Good luck to you!
