Lithium and Zyprexa are two totally different classes of drug. Lithium is fraught with all sorts of problems, but there are so many better mood stabilizers now you can avoid it. In your dads day, it was the only option. If it fried his kidneys, you probably should avoid it. But now there's Depakote, Tegretol, Trileptal is a wonderful new drug that I'm loving. I'm BP2 as well.
Zyprexa has a lot of awful long term effects like morbid obesity and all the risks that brings, as well as a lot of type 2 diabetes popping up. There was a lot of scandal surrounding the testing of this drug, and a lot of lawsuits for the damage it's caused. It also has a huge aggressive marketing campaign aimed at doctors. It's never really been proven to be any better than Haldol, just a LOT more expensive. I'd do Trilofon before Zyprexa, safer and cheaper. Unless you just have to weigh 400 pounds and die young of a heart attack, then Zyprexa's your drug.
If you have to blow the cash, have you tried Abilify? Not supposed to make you fat and sick, so the quality of life would be much better.
