I have had varied experiences with Nardil and its prescribed dietary (and medication, Rx and OTC) restrictions. I have not stuck to the diet as strictly as you're supposed. There are some things that are highest in Tyramine that give me a severe headache, and other things I can and do eat like pizza that do not bother me, as long as I do so with moderation. In years past, I was playing russian roulette, even taking demerol while on the nardil (a potentially deadly mix)..I had no problems until one particular time, while inpatient, given a shot of demerol, I coded. I cannot take OTC cold meds either, but a friend takes cold meds, yet cannot eat as I do.
It appears that it affects people quite differently; however, I do not recommend haphazard experimentation. That severe headache could easily lead to stroking out.
As far as side effects, it causes hypotension and weight loss with me, not to mention hypomania.
