Switching from Prozac to Effexor

Posted by maryj on May 1, 2002, at 17:36:09

I am currently on 40 mg/day of Prozac and my doctor is switching me to 75 mg 2x day Effexor because Prozac wasn't working for me anymore.I know Prozac stays in your system a long time after discontinuation, but will it last long enought until the Effexor kicks in? I wonder if I could keep taking the Prozac for awhile, a month or so, just to be sure. I know some people can take a combination of both drugs and it works well for them, but I also take Oxycontin and Percocet (for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) as well as Phenobarbital for a seizure disorder. I don't think the combination is dangerous, or why would my pain doctor prescribe Effexor? He says it would work much better for my depression and anxiety (from the pain) than a higher dose of Prozac. Anyone out there in a similar situation? Any input would be appreciated.
