Reb,
I am a bonafide self-proclaimed expert at this
problem as it has haunted me ever since starting
anti-depressants.If it doesn't go away on its own accord, here
are meds that will help:1) Klonopin (will work fast - same day)
2) Serzone (will work fast - few days)
3) Zyprexa,Geodon, etc. (will work fast -few days)
4) possibly Remeron (jury still out)
5) Buspar (publications have listed buspar as
an anti-dote to Serotonin med induced
bruxism, didn't work for me though,
may take a few weeks).
6) Inderal (maybe, results in a few days)Basically the serotonin is inhibiting
dopamine in a area of the brain where dopamine
prevents another chemical acetylcholine from
stimulating your jaw muscles. The meds that antagonize the serotonin 5ht-2a
receptor (Serzone,Remeron,Zyprexa,etc) will
alleviate this. Buspar works a little differently
and has few side effects, but it may take a few
weeks to kick in.good luck,
john> just started effexor XR (37.5 mg)-- after first few days i'm experiencing severe tension in my jaw(s)... i keep uncontrollably clenching/grinding my teeth. it's extremely uncomfortable & hard to hide it from people... (as i really don't feel like explaining to them why!) i'm ready to quit it but just wanted to ask first if anyone else experienced this & if it will go away. if i had a guarantee that this would go away within a day or 2 & then the drug would work great, i might consider sticking it out. btw i have long-term disthymia, with occasional bouts of deeper depression. it's partly genetic & partly long-term-stress induced. i'm very anti-drug because of bad experiences w/ psych drugs years ago, but last year did try zoloft which seemed to help me not feel so low, but eventually went off, & now i'm trying this because of the added noradrenaline boost it's supposed to give. thanks for any feedback!
