In reply to SSRI+ lithium+ anti-convulsant anyone? Please, posted by Abby on February 2, 2000, at 0:28:36

Abby, I am not on this combo. I do take effexor and lithium. However, I have talked extensively with my pdoc about treatment of bipolar spectrum disorders, and he has told me that his first line of combos for bipolar is a combo of lithium and depakote, so that the lithium levels can stay no higher than around 1.0, and the combination seems to work well for a lot of people. If it doesn't, he tries either neurontin or lamictal instead of the depakote.
A friend of mine with epilepsy tried lamictal and it was not sedating, however, she developed a bad allergic rash and had to stop. This occurs for some people, not all, and apparently you know fairly early on if it will or not. Now she is on neurontin, which she tolerates well, but it makes her feel tired a lot.

Are you considering this combo for depression? Do you have manic symptoms? Forgive me for not recalling if you described your symptoms in an earlier post.

Good luck.
